Stearing cable Lube/nut

I replaced my stearing cable last year. It loked like it had got water up in it and was quite rusty.
Im sure this help'd in it failure.

After I installed the new cable. I was so happy with how easy the boat now turned that I wanted to make sure it stayed this way. I saw peter Chandler had posted a Nut that had a ZERK or oil fitting in it that could be installed on the stearing cable that would doe 2 thing's 31 Keep water out #2 Add oil to the cable to keep it moveing smooth.

I ordred a Nut Lube kit from West Marine. What i found is. The threaded end of the shaft screws into the stearing cable. The other end is coverd by a seal the sorta keeps water out.

So I guess I have to put some threads on the other end of the shaft and then install the nut?

Ok no problem. The thing is that the Nut kit. Has a cheezy seal Its a hard plastic seal that loosely fits into the nut. I don't see how this "Hard plastic seal" is gonna do much because it dosent seet very well into the nut. Infact I bet the stock seal will do a better job than this aftermarket one?

Is there a better kit that anyone knows of or should I work with this one to make the end seal better.??? The first pic has the shaft nut and the rod (that threads into the stearing cable) and the 2nd pic is the end of the shaft (the side with no thread) that would need threads and the nut made to have a better seal

Not sure about kit alternatives, but for starters you can buy metal zirks (grease fittings) at any auto store to replace the plastic one. Better would be to put a 8-14" extension tube to the nut and put a zirk on the extension tube so you do not have to reach deep into the bilge to grease it.

Its not the Zerk thats the week link in this kit. And I think the lube that comes in the kit is not thick like greese its thinner like chain or cable lube.
The lit comes with a small bottle of lube that has a hose the screws into the fitting. Then you squeeze the lube into the cable.

What I want to prevent is watter comming back up into the cable and canusing rust ect. This kit uses a hard plastic washer to work as a O ring!
The problem is the plastic washer slides in and out of the nut very easy

this is the Kit I have, The question is is there another/ Better kit than this because this dosent seem like this is gonna keep out or seal the shaft
