I'm looking at a boat lift that's about an hour away and wondering what's the best way to get it back to my house? It's about 10' wide and I think the limit in Michigan without a permit is 8' maybe? It also has a 23' canopy that's longer than my trailer so I'm not sure what to do with that either....

Do people usually move these in one piece or break them down? Is it hard to take them apart and put them back together? I just moved to a lake so this is my first experience with a boat lift...

Here's a picture of the one I'm looking at, any advise is appreciated!

I rented a snowmobile trailer for $50 from a rental shop and had at it with a couple of buddies. We trailered it about 150 miles from where we bought it to my lake. It's steel too - bitch is HEAVY.

when we transport them at work we lay them on their sides with the wheel on the top side...you should take the canopy off and transport that seperately......we drive them from fenton to waterford so not that short of a drive.....we use a flat trailer similar to a snowmobile trailer....

Be careful whatever you do, strap the hell out of it with heavy duty racheting straps. I've moved a couple lifts in the last few years for some friends but that was less than 10 miles. We used a flat bed car trailer. 2 years ago I bought a 4000 lbs shorestation with 22 foot canopy. I took the canopy off and it splits in two so that was easy to put inside the lift for transport. I moved it from southern Wisconsin to northern Wisco (~4 hrs.) I used a car trailer and my expedition which worked great. I registered the trailer with all the permits and I would recommend you doing that for the haul. Could have some fines coming your way if the police want to pull you over. The permits were either free or real cheap so look into it. The rig will be very tall and wide so be very careful wherever you are!!

For local moves we have used a flat bed wrecker.

Thanks for the advise! Apparently this canopy only splits in 2 the long way, so I think I'm going to try it with the canopy still on top. We'll strap 'er down good, throw some red flags on it and see how it goes!

At 10' you need a permit to trailer it on the road as mentioned before. They are cheap so I would recommend doing it.

Well I got it home in one piece! It actually went pretty smooth. One thing I learned is that the back rounded portion of the canopy is not fastened to the main part. I supported it as shown in the picutre below, but halfway down the road it pulled out, we had to stop and tie the 2 pieces together to keep it from separating. At least we had it strapped to our supports so it didn't go bouncing down the road!

**** - I should have rememberd to tell you that. As you can see in the picture of mine - one of ours came off as well. Luckily it just happened when we were loading the lift onto the trailer.

Glad you got it.

My brother and law just moved a shore master a long ways (four hours of back roads) using a 6 X 9 trailer from U Haul and a Subaru outback. When I first saw it I did not think we were going to be able to even get it out of the water. Then I thought it would not fit in the trailer. 5 ratcheting straps held everything super tight (stopped a couple of times to check on everything) and we had no problems.
