How much should I run to each 485? I really want them to crank. Baisically my question is how much can they handle from an amp? One amp that I am looking at Is 600x1 at 4ohms rms. Would that be plenty or should I go bigger, I know alot of ppl run syn 2s for each 485 which is 700x1 at 4ohms. I know the max is 600 on the speakers but I really don't know alot about audio equip.

600 would be PLENTY to them. 450 to 550 to each from a good, clean source will make you plenty happy.

I'll just be sure to do 50% more than whatever you do.

just start with the gain off and freq around 120 and slowly go up with the gain until it distorts, then back off a hair. head unit at 80% of max vol.

120? That seems pretty high. I'm running mine at 90, but I don't have a sub that can keep up with them either.

I have 2-485s and run a syn 2 to each of them. Tim at Wetsounds says this is the ultimate setup and I have to agree!

you don't have to keep it there, but in a boat's open environment you want a higher freq. than a car. same with your sub too. if it's too bright turn it back down.

The Pro485 due to its size is one of the few tower speakers that still has decent output to contribute below 100 hz.
600 watts per Pro485 is probably safe if its clean power at that level, and if its properly tuned and if correctly used. You'll enjoy the extra reserves for musical peaks. It won't be the maximum clean power that will damage the speakers. A lot less power can be run into compression and surpass the speaker's thermal capacity. So just run your amplifer in the 'clean' zone.

I've had 2k watts to the WS XXX that's rated at 1k watts max. Been 2 years and still going strong, nary a hiccup. Also put 150 watts to the WS-650's that are rated at 100 watts--been 3 years with no problems. I take great care to tune them properly though and don't try to kill them. I think WS is rated pretty conservative for what they can actually tolerate if you tune them properly.

just my $.02....I don't have to replace yours if you blow them up though. lol

So in everyones opinion what will be louder, a pair of 80s with 200RMS on each one or a single 485 with 600+ RMS?

you will be much happier with the SYN4

well technically 1 485 will be louder simply because more watts, but not sure about db's. with the 485 you'll have 2 8's and a horn. with 80's you'll have 2 8's and 2 horns. 1 485 will look goofy sitting in the center of your tower all alone though. definitely get a syn amp.
