Just picked up the new XTi, now the search is on for a better lens for shooting from the boat. Any input would be great.

Thanks.

I can't say enough good things about the 70-200 F/4. No, its not as good in low light as the 2.8, but at ~$500 its a lot more affordable for the average joe. I have 0 buyers remorse after a summer. At full length (70 for us) the rider is a little bigger than the frame at 200 mm.

I agree with the 70-200 F4 L glass. The 2.8 is faster but I have heard getting the DOF at wide open is pretty difficult for an amatuer photog.

Another little thing I got which really helped was an eyepiece extender and a 18mm eyecup ($50 total for both extender and cup), like a video camera. There are a lot of complaints about the viewfinder for the rebels being less than desireable.

Where can I get a good deal on the canon
70-200F/4?

i would suggest buying used lenses off of fredmiranda.com. Your saving money while not loosing Image quality. I shoot most wakeboarding with my 70-300 IS lense, and i love it. I was torn between that lense and the 70-200 f4 but im glad i went with the extra 100mm zoom and the image stabilizer. I do a lot of other shooting besides wakeboarding and the IS has saved a lot of shots. plus i like the extra 100mm zoom for tight shots of wakeboarders. either way, you wont be dissapointed.

taylor -I've used the 70-300IS quite a bit and while it is a very good lens the image quality and AF performance aren't quite as good as the 70-200.

The 70-200 F4 is given Canon's coveted "L" rating which it rightly deserves and I've yet to come across a better lens for the price.

I just went in to look at the E500 and the RebelXt to try and make my mind up between the two. Once I saw that they had the XTi I went ahead and got it. Would have rather bought from Costco but they did not have them in out store here in Stockton.
