Can someone comment on this lens. I just purchased a Rebel XT with the 18-55mm lens and I am looking for a second lens that I can shoot wakeboarding with. I am a beginner when it comes to DSLR's, so I'm not looking for anything super high tech. I want something that will give me a decent picture when zooming in to something 75-100 feet away (meaning a wakeboarder from the boat). I am used to point and shoot cameras, but want to get more into learning about shooting wakeboarding photography with a DSLR. Also, if I were to purchase this lens used (used approx. 12 times), what would be a good price to offer?

Also, if this lens absolutely sucks, then what others would you recommend? Is this lens any good...

Yeah, I know the Tamron lens is 75-300mm. The canon is 55-200mm though. I am just looking for something in that range.

For wakeboarding the Canon 70-200L F/4 or 2.8 are hard to beat. The f/4 can be bought for around 500 used or 600 new.

Yeah, I knew the L lenses were top quality, but I only spent a little over $400 on the camera and original lens, so I'm not looking to spend a ton on a second lens.

By the way, is there any quality difference between the Canon 55-200mm USM lens and the Canon 75-300mm USM lens? If the quality is the same, shouldn't I just go with the 75-300mm?

Ok, I did some more research and read some good reviews on this lens...http://www.tamron.com/lenses/prod/a03.asp. What are your opinions on it? Better than the canon model? Thanks.

Common theme on the Tamron is slow autofocus. I personally have never been able to put up with that. If a 1/4 or half of your shots are out of focus you'll be tearing your hair out!.

According the the few reviews here: http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=253&sort=7&cat=43&page=1, the lens seems to focus alright.

Would you guys recommend the cannon over the tamron or vise versa? I guess I don't really have many options with a budget of under $200. Any other suggestions?

If you really want to get into wakeboard photography then I would highly suggest saving for the f4L from canon. It is the best bang for the buck in that focal length and will blow the cheap lenses out of the water. Spending your money on quality glass will do far more for your photos then any body.

You compare even in focus shots from that Tamron to the 70-200 f4 L and it will be tough to go back.

It's pretty easy to tell the "gems" are in the Tamron/Sigma lines if you read the forums and I've never heard that lens mentioned. But if you can get a deal on one give it a try, you can always Ebay it later.

One more comment:

Under $200, look at Tokina. If get one that's built right they're not too bad, just wide variation in quality lens to lens from what I hear.

A sub $300 lens just goes in the box with no attempt at QC.
