I am looking to trade in my 08 Moomba Outback V for something more serious. It has the gravity3 system with 1200lb of ballast but it needs an extra 725lb single to have a good wake. I no longer want to mess with external ballast bags and I could use more room in the boat.

Suggestions?

IMHO, MB Tomcat or B52V23. 2400lbs and 2000lbs that fills/drains in 60 seconds. This is with ballast 3/4 full at 70 feet and 22 mph. 3 adults in the boat. Heck, I'll even sell you mine :-)

I don't think there is an MB Sports dealer here in Canada. :-(

I can understand how they fill the ballasts in 60sec with flood gates but how is the water pumped out?

Edit: The closest dealer in canada is a 3,000km away from me. lol

Why not upgrade to a mobius lsv or an XLV? Add bigger bags to it. I run a total of 1700lbs in my LSV and the wake is awesome. I watch the wake of every boat I pass and IMO my LSV is as good as any other boat out there for less money. If money was no object the X-star would be the boat I would have. Looks great and the wake looks nice also.

I keep my boat in the water all season so is there a way to pump the water out without having it on a trailer?

I hear the x-star needs tons of extra ballast to get the perfect wake.

the star does then its awesome.

Stock weight hands down sante 210 pre 06. That thing has so much pop it will keep you up at night thinking about it.

Check out the new VLX,23 Or 24 LSV with the bow ballast you have 1200 lbs plus the wedge you are running right around 2700 lbs out of the box. The wake can always be bigger, but for out of the box you have a great wake. The only other thing would be to have additional sacs plumed into you Moomba. Way cheaper than buying a new boat!
Old     (deafgoose)      Join Date: Jul 2008       09-04-2008, 3:42 PM Reply
So the wedge adds 1500lb of ballast? How did you come up with that calculation?
Old     (polarbill)      Join Date: Jun 2003       09-04-2008, 3:43 PM Reply
Dan, all you have to do to empty the MB ballast is open the gates and get up on plane and it flies out the back.

My vote is for the Malibu VLX or LSV with 4 ballast tanks and wedge. Great wake straight out of the box. Malibu also makes one of the top 3 boats in my opinion as far as quality goes.

Another option if you like spending money is get an Xstar and spend the 2-3k extra and get the pro-tour ballast installed. It will be all automatic and you will have an untouchable wake.

why dont you tell us what you think, go out and demo all the boats you like and come back and give us a unbiased opinion.......

but my vote is, vlx 4 tanks and power wedge.

"Best wake with stock ballast?"

The short answer is.....only you can answer your own question. "best wake" is going to be different for each person.

Another reason this will be a tough one to answer, based on a past thread, 9 out of 10 posters ride with extra ballast on top of the factory.

Good luck, get as many pulls as you can.

Arent you adding the extra 725 just to surf? I think with most boats extra weight is nessesary for a good surf wake? You've had the boat for such a short time, didnt you look into these things before you bought it?

I agree with the rest about finding your own boat, but for the $$$ you can't beat the Supreme V232 or V212 - add the front ballast and keep the wake plate up and hold on, or wait and drive the new V226 - it should be insane.

How much ballast does the "pro-tour" add on the x-star.

I was adding 725lb to surf but then I tried it with wakeboarding and loved it. Now I am craving more. :-)

I love my wake with stock ballast. I added a front sac, but I almost never fill it. With 5-7 people, the wake is great with 1/2 to 3/4 full in the back two tanks. The tanks are under the floor, and the rear lockers are huge.
Not saying it is the best, as I have very little to compare it to, but we love it. There is almost nothing about this boat I don't like. One thing I wish it had was a slightly taller tower, but it is fine with no middle tower speakers. I have two pro 80s at the ends, and it works fine. I would buy another MB in a second.

The stock MB wake is sick!! I am no longer a dealer either. Buy Onlyinboard's Tomcat, you can get any service done at a Nautique or Tige dealer and the factory will back anything else that could ever come up.

Deafgoose,

You crack me up. You only learned to wakeboard exactly two months ago and now you want to trade in your OBV for "something more serious" because 1200 lbs of ballast is not enough? What kind of moves you throwin' down that you need that much wake?
Old     (deafgoose)      Join Date: Jul 2008       09-04-2008, 8:20 PM Reply
HAHA!

Well I don't "need" more I simply want more. :-)

Don't you know... more ballast is a crutch for poor technique

I am really surprised that boat companies are not having ballast size wars to sell boats just like the horsepower wars with sports cars.

The x-star has 1000lb of stock ballast. You need to add the "pro-tour" ballast bags to make it 3500lb total. I find it sad that you spend all that money on a boat and it still needs upgrading.

I can now say unbiased cause I don't own a Supra 22SSV anymore, but you really could make a big wake with just stock ballast. I now own a 21V and love the wake, but if you are just talking stock or even no ballast, you could make the 22SSV pretty darn big and still steep...
Talking 07' and up SSV's with the new hull.

XStar/X1/X2 (205V hull). most will have about 1500 lbs stock. (600 each side of engine and the 300 lb KGB in the ski locker). i have an additional integrated bow sac that adds 300-350lbs, which is also on it's own switch/pump. if you ride at about 23mph at 75' the wake is pretty killer. even with no ballast the wake is pretty dope behind that hull!
Old     (jwalker1)      Join Date: Nov 2006       09-05-2008, 7:42 AM Reply
I am really biased to Malibu but to me this is a no brainer when you say stock. It has got to be a Epic, second is the VLX, Xstar kicks butt but not stock and I have never been behind a MB but I here they will rock your world.

06' Centurion Avalanche shown with stock 750lbs. Newer boats have at least 900lbs. 150lb driver, 110lb spotter. No switchblade on first pic. Second picture is with switchblade but only rear 250lb tanks filled for 500lbs total stock ballast (moved my center tank to a Enzo bag under the seats for surfing). Same smooth lip on both sides but I did a closer up pic to show how the blade changes the wake to shoot you straight up. Lower the blade some for more of a ramp. Great on the go modification. Same lightweight crew. First pic is 23mph at 75' back, second is 70' at 22. Without the blade, the Avalanche is finicky where weight is placed. Drive before you buy.

Why ride a stock wake?
Old     (deafgoose)      Join Date: Jul 2008       09-05-2008, 8:10 AM Reply
I am surprised how difficult it is to get the ballast weight stats.

Most boat websites do not list the ballast specs.

Centurion is really bad for that. How much weight does the Enzo come with stock?
Old     (sailing216)      Join Date: Oct 2007       09-05-2008, 8:30 AM Reply
They add bigger tanks every year. I think it's up to 1400 but I could be wrong. Over on CenturionCrew.com they should know. Really you should post what dealers are near you to narrow it down.

"Why ride a stock wake" --because I'd rather be riding than jumping over people filling up sacs.

Here's a pic of just adding an Enzo sac reverse facing under the seats and I took my center tank plumbing and screwed it over to the Enzo sac under the seats. That's why the pic above is just 500lbs and blade as my center tank doesn't have any plumbing on it. I didn't want to drill anymore holes or deal with extra pumps, all stock plumbing just rerouted. Again, just hit the switches, no messing with sacs and taking up floor space.

I would think that Epic at 4000 lbs would be the best out of the box. I would think that the better question would be which boat makes the best wake at certain weights. Out of the boats that I've ridden, older SAN's make the best wake with the least amount of weight, and X Stars would take the cake with more a lot of weight.
Old     (rodltg2)      Join Date: Oct 2005       09-05-2008, 9:17 AM Reply
I ll have to go with Epic as well

two rears at 3/4 full, front all the way full, trim plate at 3/4 .. perfect stock wake!
Old     (sidekicknicholas)      Join Date: Mar 2007       09-05-2008, 9:23 AM Reply
Ballast > 1000 lbs = SAN210

Ballast > 1001-2000 lbs > = SAN/Supra 21V/Bu's

Ballast < 2000lbs = X-stars/Epic/SAN/ EVERYBOAT!

Not many boats will have a "bad" wake when you throw tons and tons of ballast in them....

Some are better than others but straight up
wake-for-weight the SAN has to be best... true I've got some owners googles but seriously, I would much rather ride our 210 w/o ballast and 3 people than my neighbor's oldx-2/X-1 with his stock.... that hull needs at least 2500 lbs to match our 210 with 1000lbs + people
Old     (sailing216)      Join Date: Oct 2007       09-05-2008, 10:23 AM Reply
Since you already have a Moomba and hopefully dealer support, I'd probably tell ya to go to an XLV. Good deep hull. You could always go Supra and take it to the same dealer if you want the step up in the finish.

Too many boats out there to really discuss. Really up to you. Later

I want your job whatever it is....I wish I could afford a new boat whenever I want more wake. try adding ballast till it almost sinks, I guarantee it will be cheaper. unless you do in fact sink it...

Dan
have you considered "adding" to your factory ballast? Or do you specifically want a diff boat?
several guys on Moomba.com have plumbed a bow sac into their LSV's and from my experience, my lsv loves extra weight up front..
Not sure about OBV, but I am guessing you could add in some extra plumbed ballast cheaper than the taxes you'll pay on buying a new one.

I still got the Tower Speaker bar if you are looking to spend some $$

Avoid a 205V if you aren't willing to bulk up the ballast. I'd think you are in the market for an epic or tomcat.

The best stock wake I've ridden is the 24SSV with the GG sacs. A runner up would have to be the VLX.
