any stereo guru's out there, here is an easy question...

I have a 2005 f-150. I also have a nav head unit... below is a link to the unit i have.

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_099AVN5435/Eclipse-AVN5435.html?tp=144&tab=other_items&viewAll=True

For Christmas my wife got me a certificate to get it installed... labor, wire harness, and dash kit. The guy at the stereo place charge her 400 dollars... to me it sounds extremely excessive...
Did she get ripped off?

Yea, she got ripped.

Figure 2 hours labor, dash kit maybe $25, wiring harness can't be over $100 if even $50.

$90+ an hour, harness $100-150, dash kit probably charged $50 for it, yes $400 is about right. Most places charge an arm and a leg for basic installs, others are very reasonable.

Nu Bu... after research... are we looking at different things? I found a dash kit and wiring harness together for about 60... Plus numerous shop in my area charge 75 an hour... The only thing i can think of is my truck requires a special wire harness that i'm not finding?

I just finished getting a quote from three other shops...

Shop 1... dash kit, wiring harness and install $125
add a back up camera and install 400 total

Shop 2... dash kit, wiring harness and install $150

Shop 3... dash kit, wiring harness and install $100

That's what they charge around here, HO-LE-CRAP yes your poor wife got ripped on that one. I would go back into that shop and ask WTF. I was guessing they overcharged your wife for the install kit and wiring harness. Most new vehicles need a wiring harness to interface with the computer, mine was over $100 for my truck to put in a nav system, dash kit was $25, I had to get a new bezel for the double din opening, etc..

Luckily no services were rendered... We are going to ask these guys to either adjust their price we are going to get it installed tomorrow at one of the other shops...
Overall thats F'D up... she was trying to get a nice xmas gift and they have to rip her off...

It was at Pierrson's audio in Livermore off Old First Street... Stay away..

The most expensive wiring harness I know of is for the newer Chevy's with onstar and the bose system. Some of the Chrysler's take an expensive dash kit also.

Unfortunately that happens a lot...

I think that some shops see a woman come in and figure they can charge her through the roof for something basic because she won't know the difference.

Ending to the story.... My wife wanted to make things right so after she called them and said either give me my money back... or do all the work for 400... same as quoted above... they gladly accepted to do the work for 400... I decided to let them do the work, but wont be going back for any other work...
