I like the SANALIBU the best.

Personally I am a huge Malibu fan for 3 reasons:

1) Comfort, defenitly the most cushy/comfy boat I have ever been in
2) TONS of storage, very versatile, and since I always take way too much crap with me everywhere I go storage is defenitly a must.
3) nice rampy wake, the SAN is too steep for me i dunno, the BU wake just seems perfect to me, plus with the wedge down it maintains that great shape, all arround just the best boat.

Squid-

That's great.

dane, you can't say "rampy wake" about the VLX anymore. Sure, it's not as steep as the SAN, but rampy as it once was it's not.

dane, you might want to change your fuel rating, too, since newer VLXs have better fuel consumption than your VLX.

SAN- IMO the wake has a better shape. Especially when you add the fat sacs.
Old     (greatdane)      Join Date: Feb 2001       05-17-2004, 8:18 PM Reply
Joe, it must be that the wedge adds vert and saves gas. This is something I can believe. The wedge is cheaper ballast in that it pulls down on the boat in proportion to speed.
Old     (paulsmith)      Join Date: Mar 2002       05-17-2004, 8:37 PM Reply
Joe, how would you compare an X2 with a VLX with wedge down as far as wake, equally weighted. Say, stock plus 800 lbs in each, for example.

I have ridden a lot behind an X2 and like the wake a lot.
Old     (wkerat)      Join Date: Sep 2002       05-17-2004, 8:41 PM Reply
Also, vlx tracks better now too so that should be changed, and their quality is way up from prior years, actually, equal to if not better than my old super air...Wake is personal preference, I like the Bu's more, but that is just my opinion...
Old     (dakid)      Join Date: Feb 2001       05-17-2004, 8:47 PM Reply
Andre, the X-2 wake is VERY similar to the SAN...big, solid, steep and narrow. Both the SAN and X-2 have bigger wakes than the VLX. (not to say that the VLX wake is small)
Old     (paulsmith)      Join Date: Mar 2002       05-17-2004, 8:50 PM Reply
Joe, I have ridden behind the X2 and the SANTE quite a bit over the last year (and actually don't find them very similar at all -- I was surprised by how different I found them). What I was wondering was whether the X2 and VLX were similar. If the VLX is drastically smaller and rampier than the X2 that might rule out that boat for me, even though I loved the hell out of it when I sat in at the dealership a couple weeks ago.

It's not drastically smaller. Do this in the VLX if/when you ride behind one.

Fill ballast + wedge down + 300lbs to each side of motor = wake similar to X-2.

My friend has an '03 VLX. Ballast + wedge + 180 on each side of motor = big, but a bit smaller than X-2 wake.
Old     (paulsmith)      Join Date: Mar 2002       05-17-2004, 8:59 PM Reply
I think if I get a VLX one of these days I would throw around 700-800 lbs of lead in there.

NICE!!! You'll be totally stoked then!

Can I get a pull then?

Absolutely Joe, but you might be waiting awhile because first I gotta get a diesel truck to tow it with!

I haven't been getting out all that much but intend to do more this summer. I'll definitely let you know if I have a spot.

I always thought the VLX wake was very different than the X2 until I tried Fisher's wake. Her and I seem to think our wakes are very similar. Maybe it's the way we weight them down. Her wake is one of my favorites... second to mine of course;-)

What I like about the VLX, is the ability to put the wedge down with only a minimum amout of weight to make a world class wake. (780 lead, 650 fat sac and the stock ballast) I hate to go out and spend 45 minutes loading down the boat. Any other boat other that the VLX has to be loaded down, period. Das Right... listen to this old man!!!!
Old     (dakid)      Join Date: Feb 2001       05-17-2004, 9:11 PM Reply
Of course it's similar to yours...she adds like 10,000lbs and has to refuel 3 times!

The big thing for me (being a giant freak of nature) is the roominess in the VLX. I was astounded at the difference between it and the SAN or X2.
Old     (dakid)      Join Date: Feb 2001       05-17-2004, 9:14 PM Reply
TConway,

VLX - 5-10 minutes to fill ballast, 5-10 minutes to fill 650 fat sac, + lead, + wedge
X-2 - 5-10 minutes to fill ballast, + lead
SAN - 5-10 minutes to fill ballast, + lead
Old     (dakid)      Join Date: Feb 2001       05-17-2004, 9:16 PM Reply
Andre, yes, the VLX has a lot more room than both the SAN and the X-2. That's why my friend opted for the VLX over the SAN. He has a wife, a baby, and family that likes to go out on the boat. (AND ME!)
Old     (greatdane)      Join Date: Feb 2001       05-17-2004, 9:56 PM Reply
I used to like the VLX wake and love the SAN wake.

Now, I am starting to appreciate the VLX wake more because it is more forgiving and less harsh on my old body.

I am ready to pull the trigger on a new VLX if they simply make it a bit more vert and make the gas tank larger.

If what joe says is true, then perhaps a new VLX is in my future as is. Yet, I still wish for the vertness of an X2 and a 40 gallon gas tank.

The VLX interior is awesome roomy.

Rumor has it there will be a new vlx coming out for 05

There will be a new VLX for '05, and it will build on all the qualities that have made the original so popular. Expect an even larger interior, and an even more versatile wake. That's probably the biggest advantage of the VLX, the wake shape can be changed more than just about any other boat out there (it's really sensitive to weight distribution).

ditto on what dane said....

Malibu Vlx weighting

mls, drop wedge ,300 on each side of the motor and 600+ in the bow add people..

no lead but 3 1100 gph pumps running all 3 sacks fill time at ten total mins to take off + one of the best wakes ive ever ridden..My favorite and i own a supra :-)

Jason i agree i like the vlx layout ,look and wake ,,the whole package is pretty nice..

It really is persoanl preference but these four boats have the best wakes IMO NO order

SSV GG with 2600lb sacks,Malibu VLX with wedge and weight like i said above,SAN TE extra weight is neccessary as well 250 more on each side and 600 up front,X2(old Xstars) same as SAN weighting.<<<all bad azz boats with bad azz wakes..

other boats are nice but they cant touch the above ones...the big Four :-)

heres that VLX wake ,bad pic nice wake

nice wake, what speed are u going

Jason, if the increased interior sacrifices any steepness at all in the wake it will not be worth it. What are they thinking? They are already larger than their two main competitors. I hope this isn't yet another attempt by Malibu to do something just to do it (see the Illusion tower, for example).
Old     (greatdane)      Join Date: Feb 2001       05-18-2004, 5:22 PM Reply
I sure hope the new VLX is not influenced by the new XSTAR - I don't want a bigger boat!

The Illusion Tower is a dog. It hurts the BU image. A standard cool/functional tower would really help sales. Every time I see BU advertisement with the illusion tower I feel a bit ill.

The money was not an issue for me when I bought my VLX, however the QPR of the VLX was huge over the SAN. What was really close for me was the SSV. What closed the deal was the dealer, WSA, and the interior layout of the VLX. I ride behind an X-2 and find the wake similar to the VLX. This pic is with the tanks filled, wedge down, 3 200lb guys, and 300lbs of fatsac in the bow walkway.

I rode a SAN yesterday. With about 3500lbs the wake was gigantanormous. waist high wakes. But the wake was really steep. Kevin Henshaw, a liquid force pro riding with us, told us he preferred the VLX bc the wake was like a snowboard jump, not as steep as the SAN.
Old     (s4inor)      Join Date: Mar 2002       05-19-2004, 12:48 AM Reply
The beauty of the VLX (especially with the Wedge) is that you really have control over the length of transition of the wake. I think it has to do with the amount of hook at the transom, and the shape of the chine on the SV23 hull, but for whatever reason, you have way more control over the steepness of the wake compared to just about any other boat out there.

For those of you that are complaining that the way isn't steep enough, reduce the amount of ballast you have in the bow.

Don't worry, Malibu won't screw this up like MC did!
