Golf cart batteries

Need to sort out my pawer situation for the new stereo. Its about 1400w and i want to have a battery bank that relys on an onboard charger at the dock.

Looking at my kicker 800.4 amps specs it got me thinking-

As i will be running off 2x6v stand alone batteries that are not connected to the alternator im going to be running the amps at 12v not 18.8. Will this noticeably reduce the performance of the amplifiers?

Over here in the UK anything to do with boats it a lot more expensive than for you guys in the states as we have a much smaller market. I have been looking at getting 2x 6v batteries and have found the following that are reduced to clear-

Finally finished installing perfect pass and my new fusion ip500 headunit today. Any help on the batts would be great cos that's the final part of the system.

Any perticular reason you're not using your alternator to charge the 6volts? I'm not sure sure where you got your 18.8V number? But 99% of the boats I know run around 13.2V give or take a little. I've ran the golf cart batteries for years never had a problem best bang for your buck in my opinion.

Opps that was supposed to be 13.2 not 18.

I'm not connecting to the alternator because my system will draw about 80amps whereas I only have a 65amp alternator.

I board on the sea and my favorite spot is about 3 miles outside the harbour and in the evening we are often the only boat there so if I fryed the alternator and the engine battery went flat I'd be stuffed!

My boats kept in dry storage at the yacht club so AC power for an onboard charger is readily available.

I just want to know if the above batteries are suitable?

Well if you're not going to hook them up to the alt you can always buy and try and see how long they last without distorting. Even with draining and recharging every week it does take a toll on your battery vs maintaining them.

This statement applies to number of charge/discharge cycles, not runtime. This is an AGM battery similar to my Kinetik's, not quite as powerful. From my personal experience I went from my Exide golf carts to my much more expensive Kinetiks, I lost runtime. After lots of consideration I believe the issue surrounds the fact that Golf Carts charge to a higher voltage than the AGMs. Consider that an AGM charges up to 14.2 volts, a golf cart charges up to 14.5 or 14.6 volts. At rest after sitting overnight after a full charge my golf carts sat right around 12.6 or 12.7 volts, similarly my Kinetiks sit at 12.3 or 12.4 volts. After reviewing the charts this little extra voltage translates into about 15-20% more playing time than.

I think you will be disappointed with the swap from your Trojans to those AGMs. If you are starting from scratch, I might recommend some of the newer Trojan T145's.

Yeah i realise that that statement was refering to cycles.

Were your golf cart batts connected to your alternator? What sort of run time were you getting with your system?

What run times you're getting with your system is a open ended question. I know Mike and myself both have/had golf cart batts connected to our alternator through a combiner or perko switch.

My system is about 2500 watts and has no problem on 2 golf cart batteries.

Tom, no matter what you decide there is no point to completely keep the 2 banks separate. You might as well wire in at least a perko so you can either give the golf carts a charge for a bit or use them to assist in starting if for some reason you starting battery gets drained.

I would go with the golf carts if you don't mind monitoring them occasionally and topping off the water in them. They are great deep cycle batteries because of the huge thick plates. Golf cart batteries aren't for everyone but you definitely get the best bang for your buck with them.

I run a 150 amp combiner, and I monitor the crap out of my voltage levels. Anything over 12.2 is good, between 12.2 and 12.0 is OK, less than 12V is low.

C/20 is probably a good line to follow on the charts for our audio application.
