I thought I'd share this story from about a month ago. My buddy calls me up to hit the water, I head down and board his 02 Supra SSV w/600hrs. A fine boat I might add. Long story short: He's working on it. The prop shaft, where it connects to the V-drive, had lost 3 of the 4 nuts, and 1 of the 4 bolts holding it together. The last nut was hanging on by 1 thread, it took a 1/4 turn to take it off. Mind you, these are nylon lock nuts. Basically, he was 2 bolts away from ripping the crap out of his boat. We found all the hardware and put it back together. Also note, he noticed the boat "clunking" when he'd go from reverse to drive. I went home and checked my prop-shaft. Now, I'll keep a closer eye on it. Maybe something you might want to check next time you're checking your oil. On an unrelated story, I was talking with my dealer's head mechanic. He was talking about a guy who brought a boat in where the prop-shaft had come off. The last bolt that was holding it together kept it spinning with the engine. Picture, if you took all but one of the bolts/studs off the wheel on your car. Then the wheel and spins around so the center of the wheel is no longer aligned with the center of the axel. The wheel-center is about 5 inches outside the axel center. That wheel goes from being a nice round tire to a large wrecking ball on your fender/etc. Same concept. The shaft busted out the fiberglass where the prop goes through the hull. ended up costing about $6k in repair.
