So i just bought me an in dash dvd player for my truck so then, since the option is available on my new screen, i went and also bought a back up camera. I thought it would be a great idea to backup the trailer, perhaps with the boat on it even, and of course back up the hitch to the trailer with ease. Just wanting to get some feedback on those people out there who have these. Was it a good purchase? Do they work nice? Or did i just purchase a dud?! Thanks in advance for all responses!

No, no... you ask first and then buy it. Someone is going to tell you it's a waste and then you'll feel bad. Once you have bought something you never look at the price again or ask an opinion on it.
But it sure would be useful to back up in one shot instead of getting out to check if you're an inch from the ball. I think if you had the screen it's a good option to get.

My Prius has it built into the multi function display, but only in reverse, unless I wanted to hack it. I wish my Suburban had a camera and screen. Our P30 truck has a backup camera with a 5" monitor and I can not imagine driving the truck without one.

They make some cool cameras that are built into the license plate frames too.

Anyone that says no need or why, has never used one long term. They are so much safer. No dogs or kids can hide, along with solid objects that jump out at you!

Peter thanks for the helpful input! I purchased one of those high-end cameras that is built into the license frame so no drilling in my bumper will be required! Im stoked for the install next week. The dvd screen i purchased is 7" and is an in dash flip up screen. whats cool about it is, after bypassing the parking break safety feature on my dvd system, i can literally activate the rear view camera with the touch of a button. Ill get some pictures up next week once i get the install done and ready!

I have a new Denali with navigation and the back up screen. I got it thinking it wouldn't work that well, but I love it, you never have to have help hooking up the boat ever again.

I don't find it quite as useful as I thought for backing the boat down the ramp. Backing without the boat, however, it seems much more useful. It is also great for hooking up the trailer. And it is cool to turn on without towing while driving & watch people pick their noses.

I have a backup camera on my 4Runner that I love. I can back the ball right under the hitch with no help.

I have the pioneer in dash navigation with the backup camera on my f150. I can watch the trailer while driving down the road and I still have a small portion of the screen set aside for the navi. It goes to the full view when my rig is in reverse. I would put it on any rig I own in the future.

My Armada has the back up camera and you can back up to the hitch in one shot w/o getting out.

I bought a 4-Runner last year and kick myself for not getting the navigation system. Map, b-up camera, dvd... I thought it wasn't worth the money but seeing that back up shot really emphasizes my frustrations.

Don't worry, just add it. It's pretty much identical to what Toyota uses. Buy the Eclipse 5510 that comes with NAV, top disc CD, bottom disc is the NAV DVD or DVD. Add the BEC106 camera and you're in business for less then $1,700. Go with the older 5500 and you be under $1,500.

I thought you guys were gonna talk about Reverse cammeras for your BOAT. IMO reverse cammeras for the Tow rig are a no brainer They work great. My caddy has it and I love it for backing directley onto the ball the first time with out haveing to make any adjustments. I was thinking about the same sort of thing with your boat. Have a Lipsitck reverse style intergrated into your transome and everytime your start up the motor the reverse cammera show's you whats back there.
Ya know rope's phantom swimers that jumped back there when you were not looking ect. I think it would be a great saftey feature to know whats at your swim deck when you start your boat up. I have LCD's in my boat but they are not front and center they are sorta hidden so unless you mounted a LCD in easy view the back up cammera Idea dosent work so well

I am picking up my new duramax today. Didnt get the Nav system but will install an aftermarket one. Not really sure what mfg's there are that make a dvd/nav screen that can also have a camera on it. Any suggestions? I see there is the Eclipse 5510 I will look into that one.

Pioneer and Kenwood also offer them. Alpine's Headunits have an input for a camera but I don't believe they sell a camera.

I got a Denali with it, works insane!

How do you hack it so that the Drive and Parking Brake feature is deactivated?
Old     (evil0ne)      Join Date: Sep 2006       03-04-2007, 11:52 AM Reply
If it's factory something like the GM LockPick sold by coastaltech will take care of it.

All of you with back up cameras, are you using a name brand camera? I was considering buying one of these for my vehicle and you can get name brand(pioneer, eclipse, kenwood) ones on ebay for around $150. But, there are a ton of knock off ones on there for around $40. I was wondering if the cheap ones work or if I should stay with a name brand one. Thanks.

I bought a RF backup from Costco for $89. Works really well. The color screen is a little small. But for the money, it's a good deal.

Alright...so i finally got my install finished yesterday and i got around to taking some pictures this morning. I think it all turned out quite well and it didnt take me too long to do the install. Just tapped into some 12v wires for the power of the camera, grounded a camera wire and ran my RCA's to my in dash DVD. So here it it guys!Upload

I bought one of the LCD mirrors and backup camera on ebay for like 170. Works very well. Little hard to see during the day when it's really bright, but pretty damn impressed for the money!

I just purchased a Clarion MAX675VD 7" LCD screen, the Nav system and a Pioneer backup camera with all the harnesses etc to keep steering wheel control and chimes came to $1700 or so. Its on its way should be here by next weekend. I am in Canada so may take a while!

The pic of the hitch above looks awesome I cant wait... this will save many frustated attempts and arguments with the lady!!!!
