Anybody notice your yearly registration fees going up this year.
The bill was $259. There was $230 classified as excise fees.
WTH? Is it based on the value of the boat?
We bought a new boat last year but our old boat (01 mb) was approx $120 yearly.
Maybe its just the shock of a more valuable boat.
Anybody else notice a difference this year?

Was around $240 last year for me I think. Sux hardcore. Anyone in WA notice how our motor vehicle registration seems to go up every year? So much for voting out all that crap tax. I thought the DOT was supposed to collapse when they removed that tax?

Funniest thing I've seen all week was this morning. A Washington Department of Transportation boom truck was pulling a Northwest Jet Boats 19 foot fishing boat behind it! Unreal. I should have taken a picture.

Sales taxes went up here in King county today, went up 1/2 percent!

Also, did you know that Wa State charges a tax for all companies transporting anything into the state using thier roads? We are charged $100.00 on every boat transported into Washington State.. They charge the manufactor for using the roads! Time for change!

wth, so it's 9 1/2% now?

good god.

i had to laugh though. i just got my notice and my tabs on my 03 are more than twice the price of my 06 denali. that seems odd.

$263 for me this year.

No state income tax though so I guess it all evens out in the end.

Call her anytime... She loves to hear about traffic issues... Seems like the same highway engineers from the 1800's are still designing the roads here! ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Gregoire is trying to fix that soon, Dave. And King county will probably make sure that she's around for another term to do us again & again.

$209 for my 05 Vride, and it'll probably see the road for maybe 200 miles all year.

Bill it's to support the filling of potholes ruts in the lakes...

This freakin state is getting rediculous, almost like the country of california in many ways.

According to CNNMoney.com Washington is number 16 in taxing and Oregon is number 37. I have no idea how much change there was in 08.

http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2007/pf/0704/gallery.tax_friendliest/8.html

Vessel excise tax: = .5% of taxable value of vessel ($5 minimum )

And now they want to spend more for another bridge over the Columbia and light rail.

I guess Christine wont be satisfied until she is number one!

I think its a King County thing, as my tabs were in the same ballpark as Kenny. My boat is registered in Yakima County...
Old     (millerda31)      Join Date: Dec 2004       04-02-2009, 11:35 AM Reply
Are you guys sure those aren't for your trailer tabs. The excise tax on a boat registration is .5% of taxable value of the boat. Thats a state wide charge. $20 would assume that your boat is valued at $4000.

I don't reside in King County
Old     (helinut)      Join Date: Apr 2007       04-02-2009, 1:27 PM Reply
Yeah, there is no way you're only paying $20 for your boat registration. As Dave said, it's state wide. That is if you didn't fib on your boat value. :-)

License service fee $0.75
County filing fee $3
Derelict vessel fee $5 ($6 starting January 1, 2008)

Derelict vessel fee WTF, why the he!! do we have to pay for all the tools that leave there junkers in the marina and don't pay. I SAY SINK THEM... $6 bucks is a cheep six'r haha.

Oops, my bad... with all the talk of potholes and highways and driving 20 miles/year... I thought we were talking about trailer tabs. Yes, my boat registration fees were in the $250-300 ballpark if I remember correctly.
Old     (da_mose)      Join Date: Apr 2008       04-02-2009, 4:44 PM Reply
Ok all this talk about Licensing Fee made me look at the Renew notice I just got.
Snohomish County has some fee's listed that I don't remember seeing last year.
Aquatic Invasive Species Fee.
Aquatic Algae Fee.
Aquatic Invasive Species Enforcement Fee.
and of course my favorite the Derelict Vessel Removal Fee.
Old     (ghostrider_2)      Join Date: Aug 2004       04-02-2009, 4:54 PM Reply
Yes they are for my boat, I was .25 off it is $20.25

$3.00 Filling Fee
$10.50 Lic Fee
.75 Lic Service
$1.50 Aquatic Invasion Species
$1.00 Aquatic Algae Fee
.50 Aquatic Invasion Species Enforcement Fee
$3.00 Derelict Vessel Removal Fee
---------------------------------
$20.25

Couldn't fib on boat value, had to provide opy of boat sales contract. Like I said went rounds about me paying additional sales tax went we got here from Ca.

Island County if that means anything.

Kenny,

I wonder if they waive the excise tax for you since your in the Navy.

You scored though, I wish I could register mine that cheap.

BTW, thanks for your service.

Yes, they did. I didn't notice that until you mentioned it. It doesn't say how much only that I am exempt. That'll change when I get to Ca, down there its called a luxery tax.

--your welcome. thank you for supporting..

As other have depicted, the largest cost is Vessel excise tax based on value. Mine went down a couple bucks this year.

Mine is 223 and change...

Ouch.

In Wisconsin, the boat registration fee is $24.00 for a three year sticker. No other taxes (except sales tax when you buy). We're probably helped by the fact that Mercury/Mercruiser, Johnson and Evinrude are all based here.

I just had to pay $376 for my 09 x15.
They get you every way they can.

The property tax is the biggest scam, in my opinion. If you are lucky enough to pay off your house when you retire - you won't really have it paid off. With the high property taxes you will always have a big payment, just to stay in the house you own.

Guys,
you can get some of that tax money back from WA. There is a gas refund you can get if you send in your reciepts to the state. Its not a ton about 20 cents for every gallon of gas you put in your boat. Its the road tax we pay every time at the pump. Only legal way I have figured out to get some cash back from the government.
Old     (helinut)      Join Date: Apr 2007       04-13-2009, 10:59 AM Reply
Yup. Saved all my receipts from last year. Still haven't sent them in yet though. Need to get on it for some gas, registration, insurance, new toys, blah blah blah money.
Old     (05mobiuslsv)      Join Date: Apr 2006       04-13-2009, 11:10 AM Reply
I'm pretty sure it has to total up to $300 or so before they will accept them. Definitely worth hanging onto those reciepts.

Darren is right.
I did it and it works.
You don't need $300. Any amount is good.
The only trick is you need to do one or more months at a time.
IE - you can do multiple months at once, but you can't split a month into 2 different refunds.

IE - you can't get refunds for May 1-15, then submit another one for May 15-30.

However, you could send in one refund for May, June, and July. The real trick is - saving the receipts and remembering to do it. I did it one year, then forgot the last 2 years.
Old     (peachman)      Join Date: May 2004       04-13-2009, 2:01 PM Reply
I've sent in my receipts for that last several years. If you have spent over $20.00 in tax, you can apply for a refund. You will need to send in the application to be assigned a refund permit number.
Something to keep in mind, the receipts that you send in must have the place of buisness with address, the price per gallon, number of gallons purchased and total cost.

Mine refund is generally in the $40.00 to $60.00 range. It's better than a sharp stick in the eye! ;)

Good to know! I figure I can pay for my registration with the gas tax refund!
Then I won't have to complain about it any more... but I'll probably still complain.

Don't get too excited about the gas tax thing. I did it last year and got $36 back. Wasnt worth the energy IMO.
Old     (helinut)      Join Date: Apr 2007       04-14-2009, 8:34 AM Reply
Perfect. Thanks for the link. Was going to ask if anyone had that link. $36 is a decent dinner out with the wife for just adding some numbers together and holding on to a few pieces of paper.
Old     (bill_airjunky)      Join Date: Apr 2002       04-14-2009, 8:39 AM Reply
I usually put 100 - 125 hrs on our boat & have usually gotten back well over $80 or $90 back over the course of the summer. A $36 return would be indicative of a really slow summer on our lake.
In my case it always worked out to a free tank of gas in the boat & we thought it was well worth a little change in our habits.

We are trying to do it this year as a dealer, but I have a feeling there is some sort of max refund.
Old     (yosquire)      Join Date: Jun 2005       04-14-2009, 1:19 PM Reply
The boat Excise tax is based on a depreciation schedule which is based on the purchase price of the boat.

When your dealer itemizes the invoice and associates a sale price of the boat and trailer there is some wiggle room.

Which is better?
a $67k boat sitting on a $3k trailer
a $55k boat sitting on a $15k trailer

Both options cost you $70k (well, $70k plus 8%+ tax) But one option gets you less excise taxes each year. (this may have changed but was this way 4 years ago)

What really erks me about the excise tax is that most launches on the West side have launch fees. So what did that tax pay for again? oh yeah, prisons and floating bridges.

(Message edited by yosquire on April 14, 2009)
Old     (bill_airjunky)      Join Date: Apr 2002       04-14-2009, 2:35 PM Reply
Wish we only paid for those floating bridges when we lived on the west side. Now that we're 300 miles away, we're still paying on them. And the really ironic thing is that the oldest DOT project in the books, the 47 yr old Spokane North South freeway project, is being brushed aside again to make sure the Evergreen bridge & Alaskan Way Viaduct are completed in a timely way.

Man, is it summer yet?? We had snow this morning..... supposed to be sunny & 70s by Sunday.

Hey Bill- over half of my receipts were void by the state because the gas station did not have the address and phone number printed on the receipt. Considering I usually get gas at the same station it really torqed me to get that $36 check in the mail.
Old     (bill_airjunky)      Join Date: Apr 2002       04-16-2009, 8:37 AM Reply
Nice. Guess we need to make a point to have reciepts with the stations address on it. Strange that living right on the state line, and always having the ability to buy gas in WA or ID, we haven't had more problems with that.

On a side note, gas taxes in ID used to be quite a bit less than in WA...... like .15 or .20 cents a gallon. Now days ID has either raised their taxes or ID stations are making a killing on us.

I just got mine back for last year. Another $200+ for the second year in a row. It's really easy and there is no minimum on what you send in. Just callfor a account number, fill in the total gallons and send readable copies of your receipts for a maximum 13 month period.
Old     (goodwin)      Join Date: Feb 2006       04-16-2009, 11:22 AM Reply
Yeah! save yer receipts from any gas purchases.
fill up the lawnmowers, trimmers, blowers, bulldozers, tractors, combines, etc. and save the receipt!
We didn't get alot of hours on the boat last year, but I made sure to bump up the number of receipts
on my claim form by filling up the Tahoe and Toyota a few times (sshhhhh).
