I was curious to see if I could find any 4 ohm car audio compression drivers (other than Image Dynamic$) for tower speakers and found this site. They have some really interesting looking, inexpensive stuff by Pyramid, Lanzar, and Pyle.

I remember discussions a while back on the issue of compression drivers for tower speakers, but I've only seen one boat, the Centurion, with them installed. It seems like these ought to be the way to go for tower tweeters because of their long throw capacity.

Is there any reason people aren't using the Pyramid compression drivers and other stuff from this site?

There are a lot of nice looking, inexpensive woofers as well...

Feel free to email me Tom@Biggs.net if you want to talk about building a custom tower with Image Dynamics, You wont belive how they sound ... I havent found anybody that even comes close to the quality and power :-)

Tom,

Yours is the first and only boat I've seen with compession-driver horn tweeters. It seems like these are the way to go, but the ID are a bit above my price range.

I have a 4 channel MTX amp I'm going to drive tower speakers with, and I'm leaning towards Skylon DeafCon III's. I'm still tinkering with the idea of building PVC cans.

These might make a pretty cool 6 1/2" horn "can":

Pyle PH65
Pyle PH 65

Pyramid TWD80
Pyramid TWD80

It looks like the horn will fit in a standard 6 1/2" opening.

Specs:

Titanium Diaphragm
Gold Plated Banana Plugs
1.75" Copper Voice Coil
40 oz Magnet Weight
Frequency Response: 600 - 20k Hz
Sensitivity: 108dB SPL 1W/1M
8 Ohm Impedance
200 Watts Peak Power Handling
Fits Horns with 13/8" x 18 TPI Threads

you are planning on using a mid/low driver along with these horns correct?

Yes. I've been looking around for a beefy 6.5" mid-bass driver. I'm really curious to know if this kind of a setup might work...

Well, I've reviewed the specs on my MTX amp, and the crossover really isn't flexible enough to handle the task of separating the mid-bass & highs.

I think this may be a very good solution, but it will have to be a future project...

DeafCon III's, here I come (again).
