im new to surfing, but most people surf the toeside to begin with right? i did, and found it easier to hold the wave BUT i tried the heelside and once I caught on to it thought it was more fun and could carve up and down the wave more.......am i breaking the mold or is this common?

I ride normal and have a Nautique, since the wake is better behind the driver I naturally had to ride it. It's just a different experience, I can do some things better on that side and some not as well. I really wanted to make the crossover without the rope but couldn't quite make it over the propwash without burying the board (even the 5'6") last time out. Funny thing was one of my buddies rides goofy on the heelside behind his MC? He couldn't even ride without the rope on his toeside behind my boat where the wake was about a foot higher? Go figure?

I would say it's just a little tougher to get started but once you get going the heelside is easier to carve as you have found yourself.
