18hp winch

Im building a winch and i have an 18hp briggs and stratton motor with a built in clutch, it seems like it should be awesome. i just have no idea on how to gear it, anything would be awesome

try checking pics of other winches.
pull dozer has several angles of theirs as well as the yankmeister winch

maybe you can build the first "two rider winch?" (half serious half joking)

ya i got everything figured out except for the gearing, anybody got some insight or do i have to experiment?

I believe our winch had 12 and 60 tooth sprockets. We used a 13hp engine... It'd yank your arms off if you weren't paying attention.

how was the top end on it? so for an 18hp maybe 15 and 60? whats the benefit of using a 72 instead of a 60 tooth sprocket?

It topped out pretty quick... The torque was insane, almost too much. We were able to pull deepwater starts with no problem... I bet we could've pulled 2-3 people with no problem.

If I were you, I'd consider a gear ratio with more top-end. We had to run our winch wide open... Which meant we floored it when the rider was ready. That made for a shaky start, and sore shoulders! With 18hp, you'll have enough power to pull off deepwater starts and high riding speeds... Which will allow you to run at half-throttle for those who like to ride slower.

I have an 8hp Briggs on mine and at the moment I'm running 8/60 with an 8.5" i/d spool and it deepwater starts me with no problem at all

were doin deepwater starts with a 8 hp knock off motor on a pulldozer. had to replace the motor because the first one decided to go swimming. destroyed the motor.

ok sooooo im thinking 15 tooth and 60 tooth, with #35 chain with an 8 inch i.d. on the spool... SOUND GOOD? if any other suggestions plz tell me

Use this guide to help you pick your sprockets. Use your spool i.d. as your tire size. The tricky part will be the RPM's... Engine specs might help? This should help you find a good starting point.
