20d questions

Ok so I just got the 20d (thats what I could afford) and was wondering for around 600$ what would be the best lens to buy. Also I really like the fisheye lens look but 1400$ for that lens seems REDICULOUS is there any alternative. Thanks guys and girls

FOR wakeboarding the 70-200 f4L and I'm not sure which fisheye you're looking at, the Canon fish is about $550 and the sigma which is very good is $300+. The Canon fisheye is the equivalent of a 15mm rectalinear - in fact there are many good de-fishing programs if you want to use it as a standard wide angle.

Here is a shot taken with the Canon fisheye on a 20D. as you can see the fisheye effect isn't very pronounced because of the 1.6X sensor in the 20D.

for $600, you can probably find a 70-200mm f4 in there easily, as well as a fisheye. try not to go too "cheap" on the fisheye. you'll notice the difference when you spend the money.

can you make it more of a fish eye with the 20d or no. does the sensor prohibit it? that photo doesnt even look fish eye to me. But I am a newb. Thannks Joe for the website.

I'd also go with the 70-200L f/4 and like Joe said it can be had for 600.00

I definitely recommend the 70-200 f/4L. It is a great lens and I bought a mint condition barely used one for less than $500. Shop around and you should find one around the same price.

Sigma makes an 8mm fisheye which should give you a more pronounced FE effect on the 20D.

The regular fisheye was really designed for FF sensors like the 5D / 1Ds mk2 or 35mm film. One thing to remember is that having the horizon in the center of the frame really reduces the FE effect as the first of these 2 shot demonstrate. Both of these were taken with the 5D and Canon FE.

spin2win, you can get more of a fishy look on a 20d, but not extreme. it boils down to how you use it

If you are looking for a good wide angle, (doesn't give much "fisheye" look) the Canon 10-22mm L is pretty awesome. I use it a lot.

It's my choice of lenses for tube shots and shots on the boat.

How do you like the 10-22? that's one lens I haven't tried.

I love it. When I go on the boat for a shoot, the two lenses I pack are the 10-22mmL and the 70-200L.

One thing to note: with the 10-22mm you must use an external flash, the built in flash will cast a shadow off of the lens.

I have my waterproof housing designed for my 20D and the 10-22mm.

Things I like about it:
1) Focusing is solid
2) Focusing is forgiving. If you don't grab the rider, usually you grab the water spray on the tube shot and the subject is still in focus.
3) Super wide angle shots
4) L series glass

Things I don't like

1) at 10mm it's not very fishy.
2) Can't use it with a full frame camera (5D, 1D,etc) (it's an EF-S series)
3) f is 3.5-4.5 if memory serves correctly.


Overall I really like this lens, it's definitely always in my bag.

the 10-22mm lense is a sweet lense, but i think i'd go for a 17-40L. IMO its more versatile if your going to be shooting other stuff besides wakeboarding, or if you ever upgrade to a fullframe camera. especially when shooting in the boat. but for tube shots and really upclose shots, the 10-20mm can't be beat.

does anyone have photos from the 8mm with the 20d.

Here is a not so good pic with the 8mm and 20d. it doesnt really show how "fishy" it can get. that all depends on your angle with the horizon

ehh...I don't personally think so. I've played around with a couple different copies of the 10-22mm lens and the edges of the frame seemed smeary. I mean it's a totally fun lens, but I wouldn't really hoist it to the ranks of the L series.

oh, and here's a picture taken from an 8mm lens on a 20D...


the lens is a Russian built Paeling or something like that. It's super cheap, but you get what you pay for! It really is fun to mess around with, though.

Odd, I thought it was an L.. my bad. I still like it a lot though. And yes, the edges do stetch and skew a lot.. you just have to take that in consideration when you shoot.
