Ok today it seems like a vehicle forum, so I figured I'd post. I am looking at the 2010 F150, I am not looking to lift it. Will be keeping it stock for better gas and other reasons. How does it tow? Over all how do you like it? Thanks for info.

Jason, I have had 4 of the new trucks 2, 09's and 2, 10's. I have had the 3:55 and the 3:73 gears they both tow great obviously the 3:73's are a little better but its not a ton of difference and you will realize about 1 MPG better economy with the 3:55's (I'll remind you that we tow the same boat but I do it with 400lbs of batteries and 700 of lead). I really love these trucks I feel that they are the best half ton on the planet they have an excellent realiability record, have the top payload and towing numbers. The inside is huge and very comfortable with lots of wonderful, user friendly ammenaties. I will say that the 2011's are going to have superior engines but obvioulsy the deal you can get on them will not be near what you are seeing right now.

Disclaimer: I sell Fords at the largest truck dealer in Washington

(Here is where you get a ton of Toyota guys telling you that the Tundra is the best)

Got a great deal on it. It has great features. I think my old gmc z-71 pulled better, but then again the tranny on z went out at 104k miles while pulling my boat down the interstate. I have a 220 SAN and have to put it in 4 wheel drive to pull the boat out. I didn't have to engage the 4 wheel drive in the z.

I love my ford though.

Jason, why are you changing out trucks? What don't you like about the one you have. By the way, I love Ford trucks, so you won't go wrong with them.

I'm sort of curious about this, too. I have an expedition with the older 5.4 (I think it's ~40hp less than the current ones) and it really sucks for towing. It was okay towing my prostar 190 with a single axle trailer, but when I got my sanger 210 last year the expedition is really struggling. It's especially bad when going up hill. I was looking at F-150s but when I realized they still use the 5.4 and it's not that much more powerful, I started looking at chevy/dodge 2500s.

Saberworks, there is a pretty big difference in the current rig and I'm guessing your 03/04 or older Expedition. To start you're looking at 265HP and 350TQ versus 310/390. You may also be running a 3:31 rear end paired to a 4spd versus a 3:55/3:73 paird to a 6 spd. I have the V215 (again with a lot of extra weight) and towing over the Cascades which are pretty damn steep I have no problem blazing along. Am I going to blow past a deisel? No, but 60-65 is no problem which for me is my comfort zone when towing. Incidentally I have used the 07+ Expeditions with heavy duty trailer tow quite a bit and have had similar results.

When you get a chance hook your boat up to one and give her a rip, most any dealer would allow this if you are serious about buying.

I love my f-150 with the rebates I couldn't pass it up, even though I wanted to wait for the new engines. I got a lariat and the thing rides soo smooth. By far the best truck I've ever been in and the smoothest ride i've been in. Haven't towed anything yet and the engine needs to break in to get better gas mileage. I don't think you would be disappointed if you picked one up. Just go test drive one, they speak for themselves.

The 5.4L is a dog in my 09.

I'd get a 2011 with the 6.2L.

Hey Hate, I sent you a PM.

I am currently looking at a new truck. I test drove the 2010 F150's and wasn't too impressed with the power. But of course I had just driven a 2011 F250 diesel, so that may have had something to do with it.

I have a 2003 Expedition with the 5.4. It tows fairly well but don't expect to pass too many gas stations.

Hate, have you driven one with the ecoboost motor? How much do they go for? 4X4, four doors......
Old     (hatepain)      Join Date: Aug 2006       12-09-2010, 9:54 AM Reply
No we don't expect to see the new truck with the Ecoboost for at least a few more months, I'll probably get to drive one before that but we'll see. Price wise we're being told that the Ecoboost is a $1000 upgrade so you could expect MSRP to be in the mid to upper 40's on it.

The 5.4 isn't going to win any races but its a great little work horse with a predominance of its HP and TQ lower in the RPM range. If you drove the new 6.7 or even the 6.2 Super Duty its gonna seem sluggish for sure.
Old     (guido)      Join Date: Jul 2002       12-09-2010, 10:17 AM Reply
Once you drive a Super Duty with a diesel it's really hard to go back. I'm so spoiled by the HP, torque and economy of the diesel that I look past the huge size, poor turning ability and terrible ride.

The F250's aren't great daily drivers, but they sure are great on the highway, uphill, or with a boat attached (or all three at the same time). I'd love to drive an '11, but I fear that I'd end up leaving the dealer about $50k lighter than I went in.

I have a feeling that ecoboost engine is going to change the way everyone thinks about powering full size trucks, especially those that spend a lot of time at higher alititudes.

Thanks for the info guys, I understand that a 2500 HD truck is going to do that much better, it apples and oranges. Ive already came to conclusion that a 2500 HD is OVER KILL, they were made to hall 5th wheels, lots of horses, not a lil old boat. I am just wanting facts what peeps think about their F150. Out of all the 1500 series trucks it has the lowest HP and lb-ft and cant figure out why I would go with F150 over RAM. I want to know that it indeed tows well. My truck now has more power on paper than it. I have Titan.
Hate- would it be worth waiting for the 11's to come out?
Thanks
Old     (guido)      Join Date: Jul 2002       12-09-2010, 12:30 PM Reply
Hey Jason, I don't think you're going to outpower your Titan with one, but you will get better un-loaded mileage, not only that, but you've sapped a lot of your juice by lifting your present truck. I think the stock truck will feel quite a bit snappier.

I like the Dodge's, but would be hesistant to buy anything from a company that's no longer branding it's truck line with the same name/badging as it's car line. It's a sinking ship right now. It'll be interesting to see what direction they go. The new GMC with the 6.2 is hard to beat. Until Ford get's their new motors out there that'd be the direction that I'd go.

As for diesel's being overkill..... True, but other than cost of ownership and ride quality they do everything better than a gasser. I'm not even sure I could shop for a gas motor in a truck anymore. I love the smooth cruise of a truck with gobs of torque. Being able to go uphill (loaded or unloaded) and not have it downshift is amazing. 1500 rpm's all day long. No loss of power at high alititude. Even my wife loves it. We'd love to get her a diesel, next.

Evan, yea thanks. That is why I want to go back to a stock truck and NOT lifted. Im over the whole "Bro Dozer" look. ha. It seems like if I went with a 6.2 GM then I should just go Diesel? Have you driven one?
Old     (hatepain)      Join Date: Aug 2006       12-09-2010, 1:40 PM Reply
Honestly Jason, If one didn't mind waiting a little bit and paying a little more I'd absolutley reccomend waiting for the 11. I certainly would if I found myself in that situation. I'd go with the Eccoboost for the killer fuel economy and unbelievable numbers.

Here you can watch a few videos on it regarding the torture test Ford is doing http://www.ford.com/trucks/f150/experiencef150/

The Ford 6.2 is bad ass too its going to be available on the premium F150's i.e Limited. Platinum, Harley and King ranch. If one wanted an idea of how that will be you can drive a 2011 F250.

Evan, I love desiel too but I think the Eccoboost technology that ford has developed is a nice alternative. You'll see it more and more available as time goes on.

What is the Ecoboost technology? looked on web site doesnt give numbers. I was looking at the FX4 which they wouldnt have in the 6.2.
Old     (hatepain)      Join Date: Aug 2006       12-09-2010, 2:53 PM Reply
Here is some reading on it http://www.autoblog.com/2010/09/21/2...20-lb-ft-of-t/

Its bad ass 365 horse/420 torque which has 90% available at 1700 rpms. It does it all while getting preliminary reports if mid 20's fuel economy.

The Ecoboost Engine sounds great ! I can't stand some of the new F-150 trim work though.

I wouldn't be suprised if all the major truck companies don't deliver something very similar to the ecoboost motor. It's been a long time coming. The new turbo technology is amazing. Tons of torque available at low RPM's and big flat torque curves. Plus less parasitic loss and overall amazing fuel consumption numbers. Both of our vehicles right now are turbo. Wife has a turbo Audi that turns back 30+ MPG's and I've got the diesel truck that's amazing climbing hills (which is really all I do with it).

Jason, I haven't driven the new 6.2 yet. My brother and I are both driving to Tahoe this weekend. He's taking his 6.2, I'm taking my PSD. I'm curious to see how much better economy I get. My old gas Tahoe got almost exactly 1/2 the gas mileage that my diesel gets going up the hill. I bet his is better with the 6spd trans, but I'm not sure how much better. I'll see about driving it this weekend and give a better update on what I think.

If I were shopping, I'd probably hold off for the new motors if you're inclined to go the Ford direction. The eco-boost is looking like a great option, though I'm sure you wont get the same deals on it as a '10.

FWIW... My brother just paid $43k for a fully loaded '10 Denali pick-up. Basically a steal as far as I'm concerned. About the same as I paid for my F250 4 years ago.
Old     (innov8)      Join Date: May 2005       12-10-2010, 11:25 AM Reply
The deals are just so good on the 10's.

I figured I would buy the 10, drive it a couple years, let them work out the bugs the first year on the ecoboost, then buy an 2012 ecoboost.

I ended up paying like 30 grand for a loaded 2010 Lariat 4x4, it has every option, plus I put in a sweet JL Audio system, the premium sony sound system, just did not do it for me!!

The 5.4 with the 6 speed is a really nice truck has plenty of power to pull the Epics around.
Old     (black_ops_09)      Join Date: May 2009       12-10-2010, 1:09 PM Reply
Jeff, so your pulling an Epic? You dont have issues in the hill, like going real slow? Thats a good idea to to let them work those issues out. Overall your thoughts on your F150?
Old     (innov8)      Join Date: May 2005       12-10-2010, 2:05 PM Reply
I give the truck a 9 out of a possible 10.

The gas mileage is not that great but it is getting better as I break her in, getting about 17 around town.

We dont have any really steep hills in this part of Texas, but we do have some hills and the truck tows the Epic 23v's great.

I would give the comfort and ride a 10.
I love my air condition seats.
The rear camera is great.
The tailgate step is nice.
6 speed tranny is smooth.

I really love this truck and would buy another in a second.

I have owned a few trucks in my day and this truck is the best 1/2 ton yet.

Hey guys, I am usually not a big poster here but felt as though I need to chime in because I will be in need of a new Ford within the next 2 years and I am highly interested in the opinions here. I now have an 01 F-150 Off-road 4x4 5.4l Supercrew 3.55 gears 140,000 miles. I put bigger tires on it and it killed my towing capility here in the Texas flat lands-towing a 21ft boat. I have been contemplating a new ford diesel, but now that they are out and still having problems, I still have no confidence in them. My Service Rep highly recomends the 6.2l, his tip was drive through the employee tech parking lot and see what they drive, and that is probably what you should buy. It is being put in the Raptor now. it is supposed to be a pretty badda$$ engine. It sucks that it is only available in the high end models for $40,000+. I hope they put it in the lower models by 2012 model year. My plans are to get a small slide-in camper also, I am afriad the new 5.0 or ecoboost will not be able to handle all that. I just hate to pay $40,000+ for a 1/2 ton truck, but I guess that is where the price is these days.

6.2l info

The all-new 6.2-liter V8

In the past, Ford relied on a combination of its 5.4-liter V8 and V10 gas engines to provide alternatives to the higher-cost diesel engines. Now, Ford scrapped its underpowered 5.4-liter unit, and introduced a more powerful and fuel-efficient 6.2-liter V8 that provides best-in-class 385 horsepower and 405-lb-ft of torque. Ford says this new engine will provide 15 percent better fuel economy than its comparably equipped 2010 5.4-liter gas model, but stopped short of giving exact EPA figures. Ford says this new V8 delivers class-leading fuel economy and is also E85 compatible.

The new 6.2-liter V8 picks up 85 horsepower and 40 lb-ft of torque over the 5.4-liter V8, while also improving fuel economy by 15 percent. Expect an EPA city rating of around 16 mpg, and a highway rating of around 21 mpg. Like the new diesel, this gas engine will be mated to the same heavy-duty Torqshift six-speed automatic transmission. Ford also points out that the new transmission features a 150,000 mile service interval thanks to an advanced dual-stage internal filter system, which will lower cost of ownership compared to the previous transmission.

more details about the engine build-
•A 7.0-liter version running on E85 fuel produced 800 horsepower in a winning Mustang drag racing application driven by Don Bowles
•A specially calibrated production-based 6.2-liter engine achieved 500 horsepower and ran flawlessly in the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor R race truck in the 2008 Baja 1000

How is the ford 6.2L best in class power when Chevy and GMC have their 6.2L with over 400 hp and over 410 tq ?

the raptor version makes about 420 tq. thats what ford uses as their numbers.

No offense to anyone but I am a hard core Ford man it will have to be almost be a cold day in He!! before I even consider anything other then a Ford. I say almost, lol if this 6.2l turns out to be junk then maybe look at other makes but I highly doubt it. If it can hold up in the baja 1000 a few years in a row, it should be pretty good. And when the aftermarket guys get a hold of it. We should be able to easily hit 500 HP (as stated above).
Old     (davenk)      Join Date: Feb 2008       12-12-2010, 5:02 AM Reply
While we are at it, I built the cheapest F-150 and F-250 with the 6.2l in it. F-150=$44,000+ F-250=$39,000+ which would you do? I am towing a 21 ft. boat=about 5,000 lbs and plan to get a smaller light weight slide-in truck camper, adding another 800 lbs. +/-. The F-150 advertisement rated towing on the F-150 to be around 11,500, which I think is crazy for a 1/2 ton but if this is the case, surely it can move 6,000 lbs. I am kind of thinking F-250 just for more chassis strength for all that weight.
Old     (epic1)      Join Date: Oct 2006       12-12-2010, 9:02 AM Reply
daves post is not useing the raptors 6.2 power numbers. Also the ford 6.2 is mapped to use 85 octane and achieve top numbers. I was lead to bealieve that the chevy needs 91 octane to achieve its top numbers. Either way its not a chevy.
Old     (davenk)      Join Date: Feb 2008       12-12-2010, 3:18 PM Reply
Chris, you are correct, I should've mentioned that. I put those numbers in the above post based on what I am looking for in a regular F-150 or 250 with this engine.

Raptor numbers are:
Ford has announced the official power ratings for the upcoming 6.2-liter V-8 version: 411 hp and 434 lbs.-ft. of torque, making it the most powerful half-ton pickup.

beast. my dads 7.3l diesel is 500 pound ft. Smaller motor on gas. I hope to drive one some day... And to the nay sayers, the high Output raptor motor is mostly cam. So when chevy release new power numbers for their 6.2 to out do the raptor numbers, you will see ALL ford 6.2's with 434 pound ft. The horse power wars are back on. Where you at dodge, or fiat. Lets see some love.

FWIW.... Rode around in my brothers new 6.2 GM this weekend. That thing is wicked with the 6 speed. Great motor, tons of power and lots of low end grunt. Finally gets some decent economy, too, with the new 6 speed. Showing 21 highway and averaged 16 up the hill to tahoe. Basically what my diesel is doing.

Drive's like a Caddy.... Smooth.

He has a Denali, but it's mostly the same drive train minus the fact that the Sierra has a real 2 speed transfer case and 4WD. I think all the power/economy numbers are basically the same. They may not offer that motor in the Sierra until '11. Not sure. I know they're advertising that motor in the Sierra.

The GM 6.2L was out in the 07 silverado, made it in the Denali in 07, and now in the seirra in 10'. I agree let the gas HP wars begin, the Diesel wars have been going on for years now.

Jason, put it this way, my close friend towed his 2005 V215 to and from the delta with the 1997 4x4 4.6liter just fine. It was slow up the hills, lost some MPH, but made it everytime. He even towed it to clearlake over the hill for 4 years before I bought the boat. He did add air bags to the rear leafs. The ride is great compared to my 2001 F-250. Just my .02.

To sum it up quick...yes the F150 does a great job of pulling the boat. Much better than my 2001 Chevrolet Z71 5.3. I have never had to put in in 4 wheel drive on any ramp to get it up. I am running the 5.4 with the 3.73 and it pulls it like a champ. I have found that it does pull better with the overdrive off up till about 65 mph and then I click it off and let it cruise in over drive and it hauls the mail. It's not going to pull with the torque of a diesel and scream out of the hole, but once up to speed, my diesel pulled no different than the F150.

so for those of you who have owned trucks of different years and truck sizes.....DO the new 1/2 tons(07 and uo) when the 1/2 tons got huge tow more like say a 2000 poiwer stroke? I know diesel will allways win, but when up to speed, how do they hold? Do they seem to get "pushed" like my 97 f150 does? They look sooo much bigger, do they tow better?

Nice truck Jason, I'm using an FX4 now and notice a difference with the 3:73 (standard on FX4) when towing and all around fuel economy is only about .5 mpg less than the 3:55.

rugdr, the Tow/Haul mode button adjust shift points to manage power while under load as well as reduce gear hunting. It also uses engine breaking when descending hills to help control speed. It is not an over drive off button.

epic1, they are about a million times better with loads of towing technology. They are much larger now, infact the wheel base on a crew w/5.5 box is one inch longer than the Superduty of the same configuration.

-Trailer sway control
-Tow/Haul mode
-Trailer brake controller

Yeah I know it's not an overdrive button...I just didn't know what to call it. Haha. I guess my problem has been that I have had some issues with the tranny and it pulls much better when the tow/haul is off when it is up to speed. If I pull at say...70 mph and the button is on that is when it seems to hunt for gears the most. Having tow/haul on does help it get off the start smoother and quicker and help it downshift, but at higher pulling speeds, mine does hunt for gears more with the button on.

Hmm, I've never noticed that but I'll pay closer attention next time. I rarely tow over 65 but I doubt thats gonna make a ton of difference.

On my previous post I meant that a F150 Super Crew and a 6.5 box not 5.5

Hey Hate. What is the gas mileage supposed to be on the 2011 f150s with the ecoboost motors. Could it handle towing my 2004 vlx to the lake which is around 70 miles away. Its generally a pretty flat tow with no hills. I need a new truck and want to get something with a little better gas mileage than my current 2000 Silverado 1500. Also, can you get the ecoboost with 4 wheel drive.

Thx, Pete

Peter, the tow rating on the Eccoboost is 11,300 pounds when paired with the 3:73 so yeah it'll tow the heck out of your boat. Plan on getting better than 20 miles per gallon on average.

Hate--will the Ecoboost eventually be in the Expidition too? we just got a 2010 Limited 4x4 love it. I had a older 150 (1st year of the new body style) and had no issues with towing, so far none with the Expo but only to the Delta. In reality I only tow in the mountains hills but once a year and not too worried about slowing down and highway towing I am at 60MPH. It will not tow like the F250 power stroke but while I enjoyed the heck out of that don't need it, so we made the change.

The Ecoboost sounds great.

Thanks for the info. Will they have a 4 wheel drive version. Do you know what the mileage will be on highway driving. I take a lot of trips to Tahoe during the winter and the 1500 gets pretty lousy mileage. What will the ecoboost add to the msrp. Thx

Doug, I haven't heard if they will be doing and eccoboost in the Expedition but I'd be surprised if they didn't as it can only help CAFE numbers.

Peter, Yes it will be offered in a 4x4 version. The numbers we are hearing are mid 20's fuel economy on the highway. It sounds like its going to be a $1000 upgrade but we'll see. Its a $3500 upgrade in the Flex.

Sounds good. Mid 20's would be great on the highway. Do you know when it will be avaiable. Still don't know if I should pick one up next year or wait till 2012 to see if any bugs need to be worked out.

They'll be out February/March. There have been some changes to the truck version but we have it in the Taurus SHO and Ford Flex with no problems that I know of. Don't ask me what changes because I'm not sure on that one but I know it was beefed up quite a bit. However, the general Eccoboost technology is the same.

Will the ecoboost take regular gas or require premium

I gotta say... The Ecoboost is likely going to be in my next truck.

same here. I'm getting tired having to fill up my 2000 Silverado 1500 all the time. it would be great to get better mileage when I'm not towing the boat and just cruising around.

If that ecoboost motor lives up the hype I've got no problem ditching the megacab cummins for an F150 in 2012 with the ecoboost.

why did they run the ecoboost with a 3.73 against a 5.3 chevy with 3.44? I wanted to see a race. why not a 6.0? Trim levels?

What's this I hear? The guy that's always telling ME to ditch the gasser is having second thoughts? I am more than happy with my 150. I like the sounds of the Ecoboost also, but I have been around this game long enough to know I would never buy one the first year out. Might be better if ya wait a year or two..... On that note, as little as I use my tow truck now I could care less about the gas mileage and HP# on that thing. She saw 1500 miles all last year, almost all of them with the boat behind her.

Wow you don't put any miles on that thing. The only time I don't wish I had a gasser is when I'm towing, other than that a gasser is way more practical for me.

My gasser tows just fine, 500hp and 550ft. lbs. Near peak torque at 2000 rpm. Huffers work wonders.

I'd still walk away from you like the ecoboost did to those other trucks.

Chris, I agree. The 6.2 would more than give that thing a run for it's money. As for the diff ratio's, I think that's because that's the standard rear end ratio for the Chevy with the 6 speed, now. I'm not sure there's anything else available.

Sick truck, though, and none of the trucks will touch it for average economy. What they should have done is showed them towing at altitude since that's where turbos really shine. They lose almost nothing, where the normally aspirated motors will take a huge hp/torque hit.

In your diesel? Possibly. I would beg to differ, if you are referring to the F150. Strap some 35's on that Ecoboost beootch and lets see how she does. I'm not saying that the Ecoboost is NOT neat, but it isn't the 2nd coming. It's hype right now. Numbers don't lie, over a hundred FT.LBS is an argueable difference.

Of course I was talking about the diesel. I doubt the ecoboost could outpull your truck with it's setup, I just don't see that happening.

Is it a Dearborn or Kansas City built truck???

It would be intresting to see what the MPG numbers were on the diffrent trucks.

If they had the Dodge and the Chevy hooked up to the exact same load (lets say 10 thousand lbs)
and have them tow the same route at 55 or 65 Mph and see who or what got the same Mpg,
