I've read that the Simer pumps are not ignition protected. I assume this means they are not safe to run around the engine, or any area that might have fuel vapor present.

Has anybody had issues with this? What have you done to ensure you don't blow up your boat?

I've seen them mounted in engine compartments. I guess if you vent the area out well it should be alright. Personally I'd rather spend a couple extra hundred bucks and not have to worry about blowing my boat up. You could also mount them under a seat or something outside of the engine bay.
