Fuel issues .....I Think

Ok so i have my 86 Supra comp and something is screwy at the moment with it. I have to give it some gas to get it started and once started it is fine. But once i turn it off it is really hard to get running again and dies sometimes coming out of neutral into takeoff, seeming as though its running out of gas. I noticed this season that there is a gas fume smell so that doesnt seem right either. There is no smoke, so is this a carb issue or a fuel pump/filter issue. Where should i start so this boat can become turn key again.

Has the boat been sitting?
the filter would be good place to start. replaced anytime soon?

Yeah it has only been used about 6 times this year, I havent replaced it ever. Owned the boat since early last season

i had this same issue on my 84 sn2001... i cleaned the carb with cleaner looked for leaks.. then redid the idle screws, fast idle, float bowl and idle pump and after all that... ran like a champ.. after all that

Carb... You have to rebuild those things ever few years!

I second the carb rebuild thing. Had the same problem. Gas smell is the float sticking and flooding the engine. Rebuild should fix this..

GAS FUMES CAN EXPLODE! DUH! Get this problem resolved before going out again. This is the reason we also have blowers and should use them consistently.

It could be a bad fuel pump or a leak in the fuel line. Either one could cause the gas fumes you are smelling. A bad pump will obviously have trouble supplying fuel and a leak on the line between the tank and the pump will allow the pump to suck air.

You should also check the fuel filter. It could be clogged and causing you problems or the canister can be poorly seated and causing the leak.
