Has anyone shot video (wake video, from moving boat) with this thing, Im considering it because of the video, but over 90% of the time it would be for the camera itself... My other option would be the D80...

any thoughts... Im fairly new to photography, but eager to learn, and I have alot of use for a good camera in the near future...

Havnt shot video yet, but im worried about not having auto focus in video mode..... Although Maybe since the rope distance wont ever change it will be possible to just focus on the rider and it never have to change it.

I'd go with a Canon 5D Mark II over the D90. The Canon is true 1080p and I think the D90 is 720.

Its also well more than double the price of the D90.....

He said hes considering it or the D80.... Theres a big difference in price range throwing the Mark II into the mix

Yeah Rob, as long as we're blowing budgets why not just cut to the chase and point him at the RED. He could buy a D90, and a 1080P camcorder, come in under the price of the Mark II...with a bonus of dodging a Canon bullet.

Don't buy the D90 for the video function, unless you have some established videography chops. There are some fantastic D90 vid's available online, but they are generally done by people who know WTF they are doing. It's can shoot good video, but it's not P&S.

I've been very happy with my D90 since release day. There are probably some features on the 90 that would make it worth buying over the 80, but it's hard to say without knowing what is important to you.

The 90 has a WAY better sensor than the 80. I would buy the 90 over the 80 any day. (if it is in your budget) The video function is nice but not the selling point in my mind. (And I shoot video for a living)

My bad, I don't know Nikon pricing well... I thought the D90 was on more par with the 5D. I guess the D90 isn't full frame? I do agree with Nate. I thought of buying a 5D for the video but ended up thinking it would be a pain for what I'd use it for. I am very happy having an XSi, a 50D and a Vixia HF10 for video.

Thanks for the replies guys, doesnt sound like the video is worth the added cost for the D90 over the D80, other than the camera itself...

Ill do some more research, and play with them more, I have played with an 80 before and was happy with it...

Image quality is all about the glass. Get the d80 and a NICE Lens. Look for the 70-800 2.8 VR.

The lens holds almost 100% of it's value. When you are out of photography hock it and make back most your money.

I wouldn't even look at a video feature on a DSlr...its like buying a sports car to pull a boat.

no, its more like a sports car that can float and has a little propeller under the license plate.

I think it is more like a subraru with a truck bed.

I have that lens. It gets a little soft around 700mm though
