I got into a discussion tonight which would make for the worse injury a invert that most likely break something or spins(360 etc) that are more prone to tear and rip something.

what do you guys think?

I have never gotten hurt doing inverts. I have, however, done some damage with spins.

lets see....stitches in my arm from a spin, two sprained ankles from spinning, but..... broken rib, mashed ankle, and stitches in my head all from inverts.....im going with inverts.

spins. I can do more inverts than I can spins, and I destroyed myself more on spins then I ever did on flips.

Obviously you're gonna have some bad falls either way while you're learning. I say one session drop the speed to 19 (or whatever feels best) so that the falls don't hurt so much and try both, whichever feels most natural, do that.

Another thing my coach does which is great is he slows the boat just as my board leaves the water, It means I can still get a good cut, but landings are fine

I wrecked my ankle on a tantrum, my knee on a spin... Never got more than a bruise taking a grab of any kind to blind. Ok maybe a concussion or two... Point? You can get worked doing anything if you do it wrong.

yep, the way you fall matters more than almost anything you are doing, air awareness and being able to spot your crash are crucial, i always get hurt when i dont see em coming.

Because of a spin a got a new ACL. Thanks spins!I love my new ACL!!!!

Had a sore neck and my head hurt for 2 days cuz of a mobe off a double up. But it was because I did not get the 3 all the way around. So its like a spin. SPINS SUCK!!!!!!

two types of riders - spinners cant do inverts well and vice versa. Im a spinner. I hate doing inverts but will do (or try) heel 5s all day.

I'm with Andrew.... I'd much rather spin than do inverts. The only reason I do inverts is because everyone always asks "hey can you do flips and stuff?"

As far as crashes: I've gotten lit up on both. I remember learning my first three and getting back into the boat with bruises. Tantrums worked my shoulders a few times. TS threes worked my face a few times. TS BS 180's worked my head a lot of times. Anyway, you pay to play. If tricks were easy and painless what'd be the point?

I agree people forget this is an extreme sport (X-Games). sooner or later you will get hurt, its just a matter of time ....

So with all that being said, which one is better to learn first. Im talking a 360 or backroll/tantrum. I cant do either, but which would be more benificial to learn first. Im closer landing the backroll ..

good question Jamie..
Old    natxbrotha            08-22-2005, 8:38 PM Reply
learn how to spin first, and dont stop spinning just because you learned an invert... trust me. i had 4 inverts before i re-taught myself how to spin again... it wasnt too painful though because i learned all my spins 1 wake first... i totally reccomend learning your basic spins 1 wake first, then take them two wakes at a shorter rope length then lengthen it up once you got them dialed in... it will save you alot of heart ache.

heartache..... You mean headache.
Old    natter            08-25-2005, 7:42 PM Reply
I learned 360's before I learned tantrums and backrolls. Took me most of the season to land 3's. Once I got the balls to try tantrums it took me about two weeks to land them and two days to land backrolls so I think inverts are easier. Never took any hard falls trying 3's. But now that I said that I am sitting here with a broken tibia and on crutches for three months from under rotating on a tantrum.
