this is the latest...

Colby is still in critical condition. Hes officially in a coma now, and has been hooked up to a brain wave machine. The doctors said he had a seizure last night, which isnt a good thing. But to be positive when they test to see if there any reaction in him they pinch him really hard. He didnt like that and his hand moved to try and slap the doctors pinching him. So that to me is a good sign. also when they looked into his eyes they moved slightly, they say its good that there is a response but hes still in very critical condition. It appers to me that our prayers are working, i know this because they said they didnt think he would last the first night, and look whats happen. and now hes moving slightly.

Spy wrote exactly what had happened on dallaswakeboarding.com

"I was the only one with him, we were on my boat. The only thing i could do was keep him on his side so he didnt choke on his throw up. The doctors told me that was the best way to treat that kind of injury. But i can give you guys a step by step on what happen.

First off we were on the last set of the day, we had enough gas to ride one a line a piece and head back to the dock he hoped in the water first, he was always wanting to go out before me cause he really sucked at driving lol!. So i was pulling him and he got up and did his normal stuff. Just about on the end of the line he was doing a w2w jump and got off balance and caught his edge and hit the right side of his face. So i turn around and go back to get him and he said he was done he hasnt wrecked like that since he was a beginner. So i did the normal haha joke and told him to get in the boat, he took off his board and hoped back in and sat down on the sun deck. I asked him if he was ok to drive me and he said yeah dude i think im cool. So i straped on my board and life vest and hoped in the water. He drove me for about 50 yards and then stoped the boat. He yelled at me in the water that he was feeling like he was going to be sick, i was in the water and i could see he lost his balance and was walking in the boat like he was drunk. so i yanked myself in from the end of the rope as fast as i could cause i knew something was wrong, but in my head i thought he just had a concusion(sp) i have had a million of them and thats what it looked like he had. I told him to sit down on the boat and relax, he told me he was getting hot so he sat down on the swim platform and was trying to cool himself down. As soon as he hit the water he threw up. I knew something was bad so i told him to tell me his name and asked him did he know what day it was, he couldnt answer any of them. He just started speaking jiberish. Then all of a sudden he looked at me and said i cant see i cant see. I freaked out because when i looked at him his eyues were sidways. So i immediately called 911 and told them about the situation. i had to pull him up onto the sundeck and lay him down, he was telling me that he was on my boat, but he said boat like 10 times so it wa smore like im on your boat boat boat boat boat boat. Then he passed out. I was freaking out because i was on the phone with 911 and driving the boat and having to watch colby to make sure he didnt fall off in the water. it was the scarest moment in my life. Then to make natters worse he stopped breathing, they told me to turn him on his side and smack his back, as soon as i did that he threw up some more and started breathing again. But he was stiff as a board and it looked like he was dead.i finally got to the boat dock and the paramedics were there and they took over. Then after they careflighted him off i was told by the paramedics i did everything i could he was one of the worst injuries hes seen in awhile.

Sorry to make this A novel guys but i just wanted to let you know exactly what i did just in case this happens to one of you, which i pray it never will. And please let this be a lesson for safty and wear helmets, who cares if they look retarded the pros wear them why not you!"

Benjamin, I am so sorry you had to go through all this. This moment will probably be one of the scariest you'll ever have to face. Thank you so much for sharing your story. Colby is very lucky to have you as a friend. You were his only chance of survival at the time and you did a wonderful job. I'll be keeping you both in my prayers. Keep your head up. God works in mysterious ways.

Reid:
I was going to try and post this yesterday but just got to a computer now. This should get every one up to date. Yesterday the Doctors told the family that the part of his brain that was hit is the most important part of your brain. Its the part that your memory and speech draws from. There is no way of telling how bad the damage is until he wakes up. The doctors are having a hard time believing that it was from the impact of the water they think he must of hit his head on his board or something else?

Today I got a call from Barbie who is Colby's best friend she said that he has pneumonia which is pretty common from having a breathing and feeding tube. Colby can breath on his own just not very well so they are going to take the tube out and put a trach tube and eating tube in this afternoon.

As stated before he does not have insurance he has bills coming due next week. Every ones donations are so appreciated by his mother Betty.

I've been reading this post for a few days now and I just have to say something. I read this and was in tears just at the thought of something like this happening to my family or friends...even myself. I fell pretty hard on my head saturday and my headache just went away tonight...hate to say it, but the first thing I thought of when I crashed was Colby and I got this feeling shoot through my spine...It was scary..

Pull through Colby...you can do it bud, stick with it. We're all here for ya and won't let you down.

Jamie, The same thing happened to me this past saturday. I hit my head probably the hardest I have ever hit it before, and right when I felt the pain, I thought of Colby.

It's really effecting everyone, and were all with ya Colby

Miracles do happen, I have seen it first hand! So don't give up on him, it is up to him to keep fighting, so tell him everyday that he is getting better... It is like a roller coaster, there are days when the Dr's tell you there's no hope and then they change their mind 24 hours later. Just pray,pray,pray... From what I see, there are people from all over the country praying for him, that is amazing in itself!
Old     (denverd1)      Join Date: May 2004 Location: Tyler       06-26-2007, 8:04 AM Reply
yep. Pottsy, Jamie, same thing happened to me this weekend. I got in the boat.

Howie(spy), you did a great job of keeping your head and doing what you could, while driving the boat. I agree with Phantom, safety in numbers (Texas its legal to ride with a mirror and driver) but sometimes you cant find a third. Thanks for being helpful when Colby needed it.
hopefully he'll see that

Colby, stay strong, keep breathing. We're fighting for you. Hang on buddy, we're coming back around for ya.

I'd say all of our donations thus far would only put a small dent in the medical bill

Figure around 20k a day for a hospital stay.. :-(

Hopefully he's in a memorial hospital that will also help write off some of that bill.

This type of tragedy could easily cost in the $100k+ range.
Old     (ronnyboy27)      Join Date: Nov 2005       06-28-2007, 7:48 AM Reply
Public Assistance should pick up some of the bill. the hospital will write off some of it and the donations should get hime with in some payment range. Hospitals will usually work with you to arrange some payment arrangement.
