I downloaded Vegasvideo some time ago from a torrent site, and I really like that... finalcut is my fav but that just isn't practical for most.

vegas has quite a few options though, maybe worth a look

If you're stuck on Windows, I think that Adobe has a version Premiere now that's not as expensive and a bit more user friendly; I think it's called Premiere Elements or Premiere Express. That might be a good way to get started without having to drop a whole lot of money.

Also, are you a student? If so, check out www.academicsuperstore.com for some pretty good education discounts...

Justin, I got Adobe Premiere Elements 7 a few months ago. It does HD which is nice, and has waaaaaay more options than WMM. I've never used Adobe Premiere Pro, so im not sure what the difference is to Elements, but it definitly does the trick. Good luck

I second sony vegas because thats what I use and I have been able to do quite a bit. I have heard good things about premiere. I think premiere is a bit more powerful but also more confusing. As anthemwake said if your a student get that discount.

Premier Pro CS4 is pretty awesome, but you better have a powerful system to run it efficiently, especially with HD footage...

I'd also recommend Adobe Premiere Elements. It's very inexpensive and if you get more serious about editing than it's a nice stepping stone to Premiere Pro.
