Street Bike ?

I'm not new to dirt or street bikes for that matter, but I've never quite come across this before. I'm most likely buying a 2001 GSXR 600 tomorrow that I'll use for my short commutes to campus. My question is in regards to the fact that it is 9 years old and only has 3000 miles on it. The guy that's selling it is the original owner as indicated on the title and dealership paperwork. He said he always wanted one and over the years would take it out for a short ride once a weekend or so. He says its never sat for more than a week or two and he only puts a little gas in at a time when he goes on a ride. I tend to believe him as the bike runs absolutely perfectly and there isn't a single scratch anywhere on it. It is also bone stock btw.

Aside from changing all of the fluids, filters, plugs, etc...is there anything else I should be worried about with such little use over the years? I'm familiar with all of the issues boats can have from not being used enough, but you rarely see bikes that don't get ridden hardly at all.

If it runs perfect, I wouldn't worry to much about it. He could have put a new odometer in it though. Thats not many miles for a 9 year old bike(333 miles a year).

Yeah he could've, but he didn't. Like I said, it looks like it just rolled off the showroom floor. I know what a used bike with some miles on it looks like.

He's selling it to buy a scooter if that tells you anything. He's just a gomer that wanted his friends to see it in his garage.

If it sat too long you would definatly know it by the way it runs. I would make sure to change all the fluids when you get it, then ride the hell out of it! Have fun and be careful. If you have never ridden a rocket, take your time getting used to it and buy gear!

If it runs good it should be fine.

1. drain and replace the gas. Gas does go bad. And it's best not to run it through.

2. The tires are mostly likely dried up and old. I would replace them right away before hanging any turns. Old dry tires will wreck you.

3. Aside from these, I would check the air cleaner, check the chain for proper tension, change the oil, and go for it.

Sounds like a gem. If you don't buy it, I might be interested.

New tires will wreck you too. friend dumped his bike lowside around a round-a-bout because he didn't let his new tires get chicken scratched. But he's dumb for lapping a round-a-bout so he probably deserved it! Looks like a nice bike you're picking up! I wouldn't worry about the low miles, like you said he probably just wanted to look cool and say he had a rocket

Nice bike. I'm looking at a 2001 Track Bike right now. It's a 750. He wants $3100, which is a steal, but not street legal.

Jarrod, safe to assume the track bike you're looking at, that the guy has swapped the front end with later model inverted forks? While I only put 30 miles on it today and haven't messed with the suspension yet, I can already tell that the stock front damper forks are the weakest link on this bike. Even though I'm only riding on the street, I think I'm already considering a front end swap, but it's easy and cheap enough.

I still can't get over finding this unabused gem on CL of all places.

The 2000 and newer model year GSXR 750 has oem inverted front forks.

Stanfield, I would start by just changing the springs or having the suspension dialed in for you. Are you heavier than the previous owner?

Suspension is important. I crashed a few months ago mobbing a bike with front suspension that was too soft. I always had the "just ride it" attitude, but that has definitely changed.

I paid $1900 with 24k on the bike. 23k of the bikes life was on the street prior to a low side and insurance buyout. He bought a Busa after the payout and turned this into his track bike. The guy had the paperwork for a compression check, valve spec and dyno April of this year so I was pretty confident the motor was in good condition. The only after market additions are internals by Fluid Suspension Science (Pegrams suspension specialist) in front and a slip on. Other than that it's stock.

Wow. So this guy is asking too much. The bike about has 17K on it, but thats a huge price discrepancy.

He was asking $2400 I offered $2k and he took it. He dropped the rear cowl and scratched up the paint a bit when showing me a kill switch override so he knocked another bill off the price. This time of year you should be able to find smoking deals on track bikes. Guys are either looking to sell to fund new project bikes for the next season or they simply don't want to stare at a track bike in their garage all winter. I'd offer the guy $2500 cash and walk if he doesn't bite.

I looked. It was pretty hacked up. No pride in the process of converting it from street to track. I'd like to find something that looks a little more finished like yours, instead of something that wasn't loved. It's been down multiple times, just looked really beat up. The bike was worth about 2K to me. I didn't have the heart to offer him that

It's one thing to say "it's just a track bike" but when its been down numerous times and the owner hasn't taken initiative to keep it in at least decent shape I turn and walk.

Let me know if you find any deals like that one you got. I would buy your bike right now for $1900! If you see a deal like that, give me a holla.

Been watching this one for the past week. Half thought about driving down and taking a serious look at it. My thought would be to flip it for a nice profit next spring.This could be a steal.

That's pretty cool, but I can't spend 5K on a track only bike. I still need to buy a street bike too.

I'm thinking 2-3K on a track bike, and a KTM Duke for the street to ride to work and back.

Ha, ha, now you're talking. You'll love a duke, but be careful of the one with the LC4 motor. The early ones were gutless and high maintanence. My buddy at work had one. Check out the Husky's too. The 610 is a great SM and can be had pretty cheap.

I sold my '02 GSX-R for $2300 and it had a ton of goodies. The first thing I noticed on the purple GSX-R is the fact that whomever put the track bodywork on it neglected to put the ram air tubes on it. Probably good for close to 5 horsepower at speed. Otherwise, it looks good in pictures. Now is the time of year to buy. Offer him something low and let him sit on it for a while.

Right side up and upside down forks don't really matter on the older bikes. It's more cosmetic than anything. I really remember wanting the inverted forks when I first got my '98. Having spoken with a bunch of suspension guys it's more the internals that matter. Getting it sprung and valved for your weight is key. Get some racetech valving and respring. You'll be happy with the stockers, then. If you still want the inverted forks, plan on doing the same to them.

Stanfield, nice find. That's clean. As long as gas hasn't sat in it for years and the tank was kept full I wouldn't worry. Like everyone said.. change the tires and oil and ride the piss out of it. Air filter, chain... all the otherstuff should be fine on such a low miles bike.

That bike and the 848 are my favorite bikes in the lightweight division. The 675 sounds soooo awesome.

Going to see this on Saturday. This bike sounds awesome. <3000 miles. 100% race bike. pistons, valves, full titanium system, power commander, Sato rear sets, Ohlins rear shock. I'll offer him 3K.

Got my pics from the last RR session of the season. I ifinally started getting my form down on the right side. Something to work on next year among many other things.

This weekend was my true SUMO track day at the go cart track.


Although it doesn't pucker the cheeks like RR riding the fun factor is plenty high enough to keep me busy through the winter. If you guys have never tried it... dont! It's so damn addictive. What some of the guys are doing at the track can only be described as awe inspiring. I had a nifty little lowside on the XR this weekend trying to emulate them.

The list of receipts for the bike I bought is pretty impressive. I felt bad trying to negotiate. The previous owner lost a butt load of money. That rear shock alone was $800. But there's about 5-6K is extras and engine work.
