Hey there, I am helping a buddy install a new stereo in his 1988 Supra Sunsport. Keep in mind this boat is almost 20 years old but is in excellent shape. His budget is $1,000. He had 2 nice pairs of MB Quartz 6.5" coaxial speakers that he wants to keep. This boat is used mainly for skiing and family cruising on weekends. It does not have a tower, so no need to worry about tower speakers. Here is what we are looking at so far.

Headunit: Apline CDA-9885
Amp: JL Audio M6450
Sub: Kicker 12" L5 in a sealed box or the JL Audio 10" Infinite Baffle (M10IB5-4).

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Tom

infinite baffle? LIke freeair?

I would definitely get a sub in a sealed box. Besides that, you prolly want another set of 6.5's.

I did a stereo in my sister's SUV with Deck, 4 speakers, sub, sub amp for 500, so $1000 is no trouble.

I am not crazy about the infinite baffle myself. I did a mild stereo in my X30 and used a Kicker 12" L5 in a sealed box. It sounds great. However, my buddy just wants something that sounds good while cruising and floating.

Free air will not sound good or decent cruising, maybe floating but that's subective. Put a sub in a box and it will sound at least 2X as good.

Can anyone give me some good advice on a headunit? I am installing a stereo in a buddy's 1988 Supra. Since the boat is almost 20 years old, he does not want the stereo to cost more than the boat's worth. He is looking at the Alpine CDA-9885. Any other HU that we should consider? His budget is $250.

Any of the mid-range Alpine decks are great. If he wants iPod, I'd suggest looking for one with full speed iPod interface. The older one's which require a special interface unit are really hard to navigate.

I put a lot of stuff from www.woofersetc.com and www.onlinecarstereo.com. They usually have great deals and quick shipping. Their pricing on the decks are decent. Their pricing on speakers and amps are killer.

If you are still deciding on a sub, I'd suggest the JL Audio 10W3v2. I just put one in my boat, and it sounds amazing. It only needs a .65 cubic inch box, so very little space. My box is 18" x 11" x 9". These can be had at the above sites for around $150.

My only suggestion for amps is look at the size of the amp. I didn't do this, and the amps I picked up where huge. I still love them, but they required a lot of space.
