I am making adjustments to my after market ballast system. I have both a scoop and a mushroom thru hull fitting from previous boats. I also have an electric gate valve that I am not currently using.
My current set up is 2 ballast puppy pumps but I also have a 4 pump manifold with 1 direction pumps on it. I like the reversible setup so that I can more easily remove the bags at the end of a trip. which would you guys go with? the mushroom? or the scoop with a gate valve?
both are 1 1/2"

the scoop will allow you to fill while underway

I'd go mushroom. You can fill and empty with a mushroom while stationary or underway (assuming the whole is on the bottom of your boat). Emptying while underway with a scoop will have the force of the water fighting the pump. In my opinion, scoops are only good if you want to use no pumps or aerator pumps that need help priming.

yeah go with the mushroom if you have ballast puppies. I have a scoop that was on my boat from the stock ballast system and it pushes water past the ballast puppies and fills the sacks while underway. I had to install shutoff valves.

Go with the mushroom for either system. As long as you mount the aerator pumps under the water line you will have no issues with priming.

Don't use the scoop. I have personally made that mistake and filling those little screw holes with marine adhesive sucked.

I have the aerator pumps with mushroom thru-hull fittings. I have no priming issues, but I don't think it fills very well while moving. I'll double check this next time I make it out.
