I bought a boat that had a lein on it. When the sellers bank sent me all the paperwork, I got the boat title etc....but there was no title to the trailer. The seller says he never had it as the dealer did all the paperwork and registration. Does anyone know if the trailer title gets a lein on it just as the boat title does? If so, I figure I will have to call the Bank and speak with someone from the Collateral Release Dept............Let me know if anyone knows how it works.

Thanks!

Jeff

Depends on the state.

The trailer should have a title and be licensed. It may or may not have a lein on it. If the owner paid cash for the trailer and financed the boat. Unusual yes, but possible. Someone may have messed up paper work and didn't lein the trailer with the boat on the same loan. The DMV should know if there is a lein. Take the trailer VIN number in to see if it is clear or has a lein.

I am in VA, and it is a title state. He financed the whole package, so hopefully I can track the title down by calling the leinholder.

Thanks,

Jeff

Does the trailer have a license plate. You should be able to go to the DMV and request a copy of the registration. It will have the leinholder on the registration (at least in CA it does).

I called the bank and after checking with the proper dept. it was found that they only put a lein on the boat and the title is free and clear for the trailer. I am going to the DMV with the seller to get a duplicate title. Glad he lives close to me. :-)
