best inexpensive boat?

Looking for something under 10k for wakeboarding. it seems like the ski nautiques are pretty good. anything else i should be looking for? there is a mid 80's supra for sale around here, is that worth considering? thanks!

ski sanger dxII 88-92 i would think you could find one of those years in that price range with some wake related items.. they throw great wakes! nautiques also were making great boats back then, the 2001 model is probablly one of the best wakes ever and would be my choice!

I give high marks to the Supra Sunsport . . . Great wake for a direct drive.

I got my 1990 Sunsport for 8k this summer and so far it has been a great boat.

I have a 1986 Sunsetter that makes a nice wake plus it is an open bow like the Sunsport. Some of the Sunsports have the same hull as the direct drive Launch but I have never ridden behind one. The 2001 Nautique hull makes a great wake and I have ridden behind several of them, but they are limited on interior space and storage. The Sunsetter, Sunsport and 2001 would be my choice, if you get lucky you can find MasterCraft Pro Star 205's for a good deal, but rarely under 10,000.

Oh, man. Hands down - 1982 - 1989 Ski Nautique 2001. If anyone argues, they haven't ridden behind one with 1500 lbs. in it. Prices are going up due to the quality wake these boats put out. It's steep, well built and can be ridden 80' out. Drawback - small inside, but hey - no boat payment!

jerram how you runnin 1500? ive been playin with mine alot, im gonna stick with 225 in the front, right now im runnin 880 in the back, but im thinkin about throwin a 650 back there and 880 in the middle to back around the engine. from what it sounds like, the last 600 pounds makes a world of diffence, even though mine is huge now!

Kevin - I run 2 @ 440's on the side (900lbs.) and a 680 in the back. I probably have about 200lbs. of weight in the front.

So, that's actually more than 1500lbs. - with it all full, the wake is a curb at 80' and you have to come in 5' to not slam into it (or at least we do). I have the Acme 542 which pulls all that weight out of the hole will not too much effort - and PP holds speed like a charm when it's sac'd too. The swim deck is usually about 2" under water when it's sac'd. The key (IMO) is to balance it and not distribute the weight on the ends.

what a nice restore job on that boat...if it was a barefoot nautique is the only way it could be better!

If you have a small crew its hard to beat the SN2001. Sinks easy, built like a tank and throws a wake that rivals most modern boats.

If you buy one, just plan on getting a tower and racks. It makes an enormous difference in the interior space.

Jer I have those same Pro 80's in the same color how do you like them?

jerram- so you ride at 75 feet? right now i ride 70 feet to 75 depends on how i feel that day. i tend to get more pop at 70 feet at 23 mph. does it have a lot of kick or "buck" with 1500 pounds?

i want a 2001. I gotta keep savin. Does anyone know the beam width on a mid 80's 2001? Doesnt have to be perfect. Maybe Jerram can help me out on this one. What is the width in between the back legs of your monster tower? I have a monster tower on my bayliner. I know they say monster towers are non transferable unless you have the perfect width but you never know i might have that perfect width

Second the 2001

Eric, I can't remember correctly, but I think the back legs on my tower were either 74 or 78 inches wide.

Eric - I'll check it out this evening (Gotta finish 'winterizing' before our freeze hits tonight, so I'll be messing around in the boat). The beam on a 1982-1989 Ski Nautique 2001 is 84" (I can't remember my tower mounting widths off the top of my head).

Kevin - I ride at 70-75' total length (handle included). My buddy ride at 75-80' total length. This all depends on if we have it fully weighted or not. It has tons of kick when weighted. Steep wake that kicks you more up as opposed to out and across.

Daniel - I LOVE them! I've actually thought about putting a 485 in the middle...but I don't know if my wife would come out any more! They are incredibly loud. I'm running them with 260wRMS to each speaker off of an infinity amp and will put an inline capacitor on it this winter. I think my sub is sucking too much battery juice as I have to watch it at close to full volume to keep the system from clipping. Having the speakers above a bimini is almost a must - it helps to keep your passenger's ears from bleeding.

I love my 2001 as well. Great boats just not alot of space. If you are all about wakeboarding and your budget is 10k the 2001 is the perfect boat for you. If you want to take a whole crew of people out and party take people that you like because you will be running into each other.

I usually go out with 3 or 4 people and my 2001 works perfectly for me. I just need to get some more weight.

Jerram, check ebay for capacitors. I got a really good one brand new in the box for 20 bucks! normally it was 100! just waiting on a friend to finish building my fiberglass speakerboxxx so i can install all my new toys! As much as i hate winter, i love installing all the new gadgets! On a different note...funny how this turned into a 2001 thread! i love seein everyone elses 2001's and the freakin awesome wakes they throw!

So I started a new thread for this on wakeboarder.com, but i will post in here too. Tomorrow I am going to check out a 1986 CC 2001. What should i look for in case i want to request a lower price. They are asking 5900. The boat has 700hours. I am just trying to be cautious cause this is the first boat i would purchase on my own and i dont feel like getting f-ed over on a boat.

Kevin - I agree with you on the length. Like Jerram said, the wake becomes a curb if you get too far back at say 80 feet...at least at speeds 23mph or less. I used to blow thru the wake at that length and get no pop because the wake was too steep and it would grab the nose of your board. Coming in 5 feet made a WORLD of difference. Now it's to the moon!

THese boats have wooden stringers and floors. You need to feel around for soft spots in the floors and take a wrench and try to tighten the bolts on the motor mount bolts and that should tell you if the stringer are wrotten. That boats interior is gone but 5900 seems like a pretty good price if the motor/trans is good.
I have never priced a new interior but I think I remembe on here someone saying it was around 2k to get done professionally. The best way to check the motor is to run a compression check or at least drive the boat. When you drive it run it hard.

How do you do a compression test on site? I dont know if I can test drive the boat cause it is off season here.

Yes I am a huge fan of the older Supras. They appear to have been built better then, than now.

The vinyl will have to be recovered - I think what Jon is saying is that the vinyl will be too hard/brittle to restitch.

Check for soft spots. Look for spider cracks in the glass covering the stringers. Hook a hose up to it and have then crank it up. Let it warm up and look for leaks, vibration and smooth operation. Check the bottom of the hull for cracks/damage. Check steering. Prop should spin - shouldn't be so tight that you can't spin it (in most cases).

If it is in good shape, motor runs and there are no soft spots - then that boat is one heck of a deal. You'll have some work to do, but you can make some money it!

On the other hand, $5700 makes me wonder what is wrong w/it... or maybe they just don't know that a 2001 bare in good shape goes for $9-10k easy.

I would be scared of buying a boat that I was not able to drive before using. I know it is winter but what do they care if you want to drive it. As long as there is not ice on the water I would try to drive before you buy.

I just talked the potential buyer of that Ski Nautique on the phone. For 5700 I think I would almost buy it sight unseen. I told him how to go through a compression test. Reminds me so much of my old boat. Everything looks to be in good condition. I told him to lift out the rear floor, and to see if he could convince them to help him do a compression test. Nice boat. And given that it spent its life in New England, was probably lightly used and treated well.

Erik i have to say i disagree on the older supras. My friend just bought an 89 saltaire, the BIG 23 footer. The WORST wake i have ever riden behind. absolutely no pop. and we had 1000 pounds of ballast in it. End of the day i wished i had taken out my boat!

other Eric- with regards to that 2001, even if you put 2 grand into the interior, you will get it back if you ever sell it. The value on these boats go up every day because wakeboardings best kept secret is out! Although, i could never part ways with mine, shes almost paid off, i may get SAN in like 5 years but ill always have my 2001. One things for sure, she turns heads everywhere we go, and nearly every time we go out someone comes up to me on the boat ramp wanting to know about her. what can i say, im a proud and happy owner
thats her without ballast loaded and without the pylon on (went with a pylon rather than tower, really thought it kept the old school feel to it.
you can kind of get an idea of the wake there, whats cooler is the trajectory of the board and that im nearly half way across and still goin up!

oh yeah that last pic is with only 1000 pounds, cant wait to get another 680!

Man, if the motor is in good shape and the floor/stingers are good - you found a gem... I paid $8k for mine, and that was before adding the tower and all my toys to it...

For all of you who say you can't ride with a lot of people, I built a bench for the back and we fit about 8-9 people in the boat. Yes, it is way over the limit and is really crowded. But with 2 more fat sacs the wake is hard to beat. I still need a new prop.... acme 540 or 542 if anyone has one.

leo - go with the 542...especially w/that weight. I'm lovin' mine.

Measured: Beam is 84" as mentioned. My rear brackets are 76" from center to center. Rear leg to front leg is around 62". That should give you an idea of whether it'll transfer. You can get a visual of the tower mounts at the link above.

so I just put the down payment on the 2001. I should be able to bring it home around thursday or so. I will have some more pictures then. Question, where do you guys have the horns mounted on your 2001's? On mine ((i love how that sounds, my 2001)) it is mounted on the bow. I am looking clean off the bows look, get rid of the horn from up there and get rid of the silver rails up front too. I only have a button my horn does not work. If you take it off I wuld just buy an air horn and not wrry abouthaving a horn.

Congrats on the boat. I don tthink you will be disappointed. I keep looking at all of these new boat and love everything they have to offer but really do not see any reason to upgrade.

Kevin beautiful boat same colors as mine except I have a blue wakeair tower. And mine is getting floor and stringers replaced. Eric I think you might want to keep those rails up front It will make it easier to tie off to something if you ever need too.

Erik, the person who runs the2001.com, coached me through some of the things i needed to look at when checking out my 2001 before buying it. I love that website. Your boat is sick, i love the removal of the 2001 and the ski nautique logo. Debating on doing the same thing with my boat then doing a wet sand down the whole thing.

Congrats on the purchase. I'm sure you'll fall in love with it just like the rest of us. On a sad note...I put ours up for the winter yesterday.

Eric, That sound like a good deal to me. Last summer we sold an 85 with about 3000 hrs for $6000 and it didn't run so good.

Thanks Mark, Ya I cant wait to start this project. Problem is its so cold out that its tough to work on anything. I think one of my first things will be re-oiling the teak platform, and probably making a stencil of it because I'm going to replace it eventually with a cedar one, with a slightly newer design.

It is sadly to cold to do any wet sanding or washing. But I have a lot of work to do just taking stuff out of the bayliner to put into the nautique. Can't wait

so, after reading all about this stuff i can tell you guys think the best boat for $5000-$10,000 is the SN2001. my dad was telling me that hes lookin into a new boat soon and i was looking for suggestions.(looks like i found a good one)

I looked and looked for a Supra. My buddy has a Saltare that his family has had since new.Sick wakeboarding and awsome skiing on the top end. I couldn't find a Supra to save my life, so I bought a Mastercraft. I love my Mastercraft, but if I could do it over I would still wanna get my Supra!FYI, I found my Supra yesterday on Craigslist in the SF Bay Area.If I sold my '88 Prostar today, I would buy the Supra tom. just for the wake.
