Honda Pilot

I just saw the commercial. The one where the monster truck is out of gas. "Ya, I get about 23 on the HW."

I have a 350Z. I got 28 yesterday driving from Folsom to LA. ...


23 just seems so low. Besides my car is a blast to drive.

I mean the new Avalanche gets 21.

pilot is heavier and has more wind resistance than your 350Z

Highest I see is 20? 4X4 flexfuel gets 14 on the hwy? Sweet.

I don't mean to start an argument. I just thought it was kinda low to be bragging about. With all the talk about gas mileage lately.

Yeah, I hear you. A bit low. It's funny they've had the 'run on 3 or 4 cylinder' technology on the pilot since 2006, but this is the first I've heard about it in a commercial.

Toyota Highlander is rated up to 24 MPG with 20 more hp. I think the GMC Acadia gets better MPG, too!

IMO, I'll take a V8 truck with more power, towing capability, and slightly worse fuel economy.

I get over 20 on the highway in my V8 4Runner. I thought the same thing about the Highlander Hybrid (28 MPG)

The 2008 350Z auto has an EPA rating of 17/24 (premium required)

The 2009 4wd pilot has an EPA rating of 16/22. (regular gas) It also tows 4500lb boat and has 8 passenger seating.

Looks like the Pilot wins?

The V8 4runner is rated at 14/17.

For model-year 2008, the EPA has revised the way the estimated fuel economy rating is determined. Actual mileage may vary with driving conditions

I have a 350z and there is no way you got 28. I get on the average 16-18

Read it again, he got 28mpg from folsom to LA. Which I'm guessing is mostly hwy driving. The 3.5 vq nissan motor sucks gas in the city but is actually pretty economical on the highway. This explains why your average is probably so low.

I did read that and still find it hard to believe he got 28 on the highway. Maybe he never tacked it past 3000 RPMs

28mpg in a 350z could only be obtained by following combination:

60%- driving at 60, without AC and windows up.

40%- Foot Pedal Power

I got 24.5 on the way up @ 80 mph and 28 on the way back @ 75. (Top down in both directions)

Gearing, wind, weight lots of things come to mind about your comparison.
You need to compare apples to apples and not apples to oranges.

You need to stay in the same class vehicles to compare mileage.

My wife's Audi A4 is rated at 29 on the highway but if we set the cruise at 72 in 6th gear and stay on flat interstate we see 34-36 mpg on a 60 mile trip.

You could probably get 50MPG drafting a Semi going downhill in a 84' Trans-Am.

I think we all agree MPG is effected by driver, elevation, weather, etc.

I think the specs on the new pilot look pretty good. The new toyota highlander is a good comparison to the 2009 Pilot. It has a little more tow capacity, same torque as the pilot but 20 more HP. The 2008 4wd highlander has epa rating of 17/23 compared to the 4wd pilots 16/22.

A friend of mine has a couple year old Pilot. It is NOT a tow vehicle. He almost chit himself several times while pulling a little rented popup camper with it.

trance - what kind of problems did he have towing a pop up trailer? I just towed a 5000LB boat with my MDX which is almost identical to a pilot. It gets the job done.

I'm taking a serious look at a used Honda Ridgeline which is the same thing. I don't need a serious tow vehicle, just something to launch from the storage unit, get me to tahoe, ft a childs seat, and haul 2 dirt bikes.

People are claiming 20+MPG average out of the 247HP V6. It has a 1/2 ton rating.

No, it was not his first time towing at all. He owned a boat for several years and towed it with his Trooper with no problems. He said it was all over the road (probably the combination of light weight, soft susp, and shortish wheelbase), and brakes weren't very effective. I would speculate that the MDX is probably at least couple hundred lbs heavier, with better suspension and brakes.

We tow with a Pilot without any trouble at all. I don't have a photo which shows the entire setup, but here's a glimpse.

We tow 1 or 2 times each summer from Milwaukee to Duluth and back (about 1,000 mi, round trip). Sometimes we do this with two kayaks on the roof. Never one problem. We have the towing package, which includes the tranny cooler, etc.

The terrain can be hilly, but it we don't deal with mountains or high altitude.

Well that certainly proves me wrong! Maybe it is operator error after all...

Now that I am thinking of it, though, I don't think it was a true popup camper, but a "hybrid", which is taller and heavier than a popup.

i get 19 if i am really really nice to my gto. that is all hwy. i've had as low as 8 when i was really running hard. lots of smoke and spins. tow with the yukon, it gets 12-14. 11-12 if towing.

lakeski, is that a honda SUV pulling a toyota boat? you don't see that very often.. nice work.

The new Pilot is pretty impressive and the est. fuel economy that can be advertised is less than most owners get depending how heavy your foot is. I would put it against a Tahoe anyday on overall towing and fuel economy check out the torque. I am not biast at all even though I am a Honda sales manager

I tow with my Pilot....I can certainly feel the boat behind me but it seems to handle it ok.
