I have a 2006 X-30 with every stereo option and tend to play the music loud. Twice now the amp has gone out and the protect light has come one. The first time it happened the amp started working a couple hours later. It happened again this weekend and hasn't worked since then.

Anyone have insight on what may be happening? I cannot imagine I can blow the amp playing it loud, can they overheat? Thanks in advance.

yes they will overheat. Is the amp scorching hot to the touch when it cuts out? More than likely that is your problem.

Thanks man, but when I noticed that it wasnt working I didnt think to feel it. From what I have read on the internet they can overheat. The compartment where its stored definatly gets warm.

It's most likely a JL marine amp, but my buddie's new X45 came with a Directed Audio amp. His may have been dealer installed.

The JL amp that comes with an X30 is the e6450, and they will heat up if you crank them up for a long period of time. They are very nice amps, I think any amp will heat up if continually cranked.

Thanks Mike, I am new to aftermarket stereo systems. So they should cool down on their own then? Should I leave the compartment open to allow it to cool?

When I'm cranking the stereo while just floating, I keep the compartment open to keep the amps cool. On the Xstar there is the front Gullwing seat and the flip up seat back next to the driver. I open them both up while floating. When we are riding and blasting the stereo I'll flip the seat back up for cooling(provided no one is sitting there). I think that would be tough on the X30. If I remember correctly, that seat is a gullwing seat. I have two amps in there and the ventilation is appreciated by my amps.

Yeah the back seat is a gullwing on the X30 and usually there is always someone sitting there. The front is just a flip up though so I can have that partially opened when moving.

What a pain in the ass though.
