First DSLR

I am looking at buying my first DSLR soon. The camera I am looking at is a Nikon D3000. Any thoughts on this camera for a first DSLR??? I am open to suggestions, brands, etc. I will most likely use it for shooting sports and nature. Any thoughts would be great.

Yes. That is a great start. Or find a good deal on a D40. The 18-200 is a killer starter lens too.

yea i have a d40x and its been a great starter for me. takes pretty good shots. it's no d300 but it gets the job done.

haha. I had to throw that in there. I haven't messed with Nikon that much but I've heard some good things on the d40. I have messed around with the d300 and it's really nice. If you aren't stuck on Nikon, I would maybe look at the Canon 40D. I have that as my back up camera and use it on the water more than my 5D Mark II because of the 6.5 fps. It's actually been discontinued and you can probably find a great deal on one of these. I've got some killer pics with it.I agree with Alan too, 18-200 is a great starter lens too, especially for wake shots. Keep us posted on what you decide to go with. Look forward to seeing some shots!!

Any thoughts on the Nikon d60?? Looks comparable to the D3000. I really do not want to wait til september for the D3000, however it might be worth the wait...

How much do you think you will get into it, D3000 looks like a good starter camera aimed for beginners... do you think you will outgrow it as you learn more?

I would go with the d5000 over the d60.

I bought the d90 as my first DSLR and love it, but still lots to learn... but I've gotten some great pictures from it so far.

I got a d60 as my first DSLR its a great camera but It will not auto focus older non af-s lenses.........As a beginner I didnt think it was an issue till I saw the difference between the non af-s 50mm f1.8($109) vs the 50mm af-s (approx $450) outside of lens selection its a great cam

I decided to go with the D3000, preordered it today and got a Nikkor 55-200 VR lens...thanks for all the suggestions and input

We just got the Canon T1i & up-graded the lense to a Tamron 18-270 and loven it
