Sorry for all the questions lately. Working on doing an install into our cobalt. I am installing a XS-12 and I am trying to decide on how to protect it. We have a 2 year old that will find it fascinating. The sub will be in either the driver or passenger console facing into the main area of the boat. I'm cutting a hole in the console and am building a sealed box for the enclosure.

I was thinking about cutting a ring out of starboard and cover with speaker cloth like a home speaker grill. Mount it from the backside so there is nothing showing on the front. It should keep prying fingers out. My concern is it likely won't last long.

I also could have a grill cut out of starboard to cover the whole thing, but I think it might block too much of the surface area and muffle the sound. Could be wrong on that, but it is definitely a time intensive project.

I'm sure someone has run across this and found a solution or can warn me away from things they've tried. I know there are a couple grills that can be made to fit the XS-12. They do leave a fairly large area exposed to prying fingers, but that may be the best option.

Now if I can just get the rain to stop so I can get started on everything.

I have only had direct contact with Wet Sounds XS-XXX sub and it would take a child quite a bit of work to wreck it. It had a super beefy cone and a super beefy surround. It looks as though the xs-12 cone is made of the same material but i could be wrong. If it is, I don' think i would worry about it as your young one would have to be at it for a while to do any damage. I'm assuming he is watched over relatively well when on the boat so I think you should be fine

I stopped at a stereo place today and was able to get a grill cover. I will paint it white so it blends in better, but it will work. I am going to mount the ring to a piece of starboard and then mount that to the opening. That way, the speaker will be mounted directly to the box as opposed to sandwhiching the fiberglass in between the speaker and the box.
