Three weeks ago I dislocated my hip going wake to wake. I was a little pitched forward (toward front foot) right off the wake, headed just past the second wake in the dreaded SAN trough. Didn’t seem like it was going to be all that spectacular, actively tried to adjust in the air to pull out of it instead of bailing. Landed front-foot heavy and POP!!
Wicked pain, had too pull up on my hamstring area to keep the pain down. Called boat back quickly, and had wife call buddies in another boat. BTW- USCG vests really help when you can’t/don’t want to swim!! Got the bindings off of the board, and noticed that with knees together in front of me, sort of reclined/seated position in water, my lower leg was sticking out at a bad angle. Knee felt ok, I thought for sure that I had broken my femur.
We deliberated a little bit on how to get me to the launch. We think we freaked someone out at a nearby swimming beach by asking for a backboard. They must have called 911 as we soon had an ambulance and helicopter in the area. We ultimately had EMTs put me on a backboard to get me out and finally into an ambulance. Had a grand time getting X-rays done in positions that I did not want to be in. Thankfully there was an ortho doc on call and he was not busy already. They put me under and had it back first try within a minute of trying.
I stayed off of it for a week, and the follow-up looked good. I have been walking on it for 2 weeks with no real pain, but certainly some stiffness. It’s feeling better every day. Started PT yesterday, and he was amazed it had been dislocated only three weeks ago, range of motion and strength were pretty close to the good side except for one direction. I guess I lucked out as there was no bone damage, and apparently minimal soft tissue damage. Now I just have to wait to be sure AVN doesn’t rear it’s ugly head. That and I have to figure out how I landed and not do it again; cause it really hurts!!
Any other hip dislocations??
