I'd like to get pictures from an aerial looking down at the boat. Any suggestions where to mount it for best effect?

It's been almost 10 years, to the day, that I broke my back. I spent a week in rehab at Mercy General in Sacto. The AP wouldn't let me walk so I was confined to a wheelchair during my stay. In the room next door to me was a young man, maybe 25 that had the same injury as myself, only his spinal chord injury was complete, so he was paralyzed from the waist down and would be for life. Every morning we had wheelchair races down to the cafeteria to get coffee. Scaring nurses and doctors alike as we careened around corners at truly "break neck" speeds. If anyone had a reason to be negative and bitter it was that young man. He had his entire life before him and he would be relegated to a chair for all of it. Never once did he mention anything negative about his life, or anything that I remember. Always praise and positive energy. Truly an uplifting personality and someone I enjoyed hearing from and about and I think that everyone that knows and/or knew him finds him an inspiration. I think it's cool little toy! Where are you mounting yours brewkettle? I was thinking about placing it on the transom and getting some of those crazy angled shots.

Fun! Can you post pictures of the mounts, please? From what I can tell on the board, one mount will handle an orientation of 0 degrees and 180 degrees. So I am thinking that two of the FCS singles could cover a full 360 degrees. ImaPD over at TO.com did a great job of explaining the workings for me so that I could understand it.

Thats awesome!! Aerials look so cool. How do you shoot with it.. is it on a remote or does it just shoot continuous for a certain amount of time..?

Thanks Rob! It's fun, I love the sound on the videos, no boat noise just the water and the glub, glub, glub when the board went under water. Which is why I fell so much! The camera has two modes, video and continuous shots - I think every 2 seconds. In that second video you can see James pressing the button to start the video mode. I put a 2 gig card in it like you'd use in a regular digitial camera. I think the manufacturer indicates the 2 gigs will hold almost 2,000 stills or an hour of continuous video. It's definately a fun little device.

For the stills, is there anyway to turn it to vertical to get the entire rider in the shot?

Drew - I just had this vision of you doing a shuv, a 3 shuv and then your patented front shuv with a video on the board - that would be sick! Thanks guys, I was pretty impressed with the quality also considering it's being shot through a plastic housing moving on water. I ordered mine through these folks: http://www.goprocamera.com/index.php?area=2&productid=7 Literally they had it to me in a day. dtw, the housing mounts on the bottom, so you'd have to make a special adapter to turn it sideways. The fisheye lens takes a pretty wide shot, but because it's mounted on such a short board, it doesn't quite get the entire rider in. They recommend that it be at 5'5" out, so we are missing it my almost a full foot. Maybe a small block laminated to the board with the FCS mounting plugs that would lift the camera a few inches would do the trick? (Message edited by surfdad on March 23, 2009)

Hey David - it has two modes. No I take that back three modes. One is just like a standard digi-cam - point and shoot. The other two modes are video and then a continuous stills where it clicks off a still every - I think 2 seconds, or maybe it's 5 - anyway, you press the on/off button to select the mode and it does it's thing.

I would think with the way it is set up for much longer ocean boards, you would almost have to make a custom mount bracket to turn it vertical to get the entire rider in the shot. If you did that, the shots would be even sweeter I bet. Send that thing down here and I will rig something up

It looks that way, doesn't it? It's just a parting board for my attempt at making a mold. That's black tooling gelcoat over a plug. My parting board and plug have been waxed 1,123,457 times and then some PVA over that. Next is the CSM. Hey wardo how are you feeling? I read that you broke a few ribs! That is so painful, I do hope you are on the mend.

I think it was Loc that told me how to use Windows Movie Maker to get a frame grab. I was hoping to get a still with this shot, but the likelihood of that timing is pretty remote.

I know NOTHING about editing software. Loc at WO walked me through capturing a still, but I'm sure I exasperated him with my PRONOUNCED neophyteness For stills, I load the image in MS Paint and go to the stretch/skew option and change it to 32% For the vids, I load it in MS Movie Maker and then I advance it to a frame that I want to capture and there is a button in the bottom right that I press That is the extent of my technical abilities in this regard. I have never edited a video, so I'm not much help! Maybe Petr, Loc or JL can help?

So is the stick-on mount worthless? Is the only way to make it work screwing the unit into the board with the mounting kit?

Hey Martin, I'm not sure I understand. Are you referring to a suction cup like mount? The first mount I show WAY above is a stick-on but it is permanent. The camera and casing doesn't float. I know this to be a fact. I'd be reluctant to attach it without a permamnet mount and/or leash especially in water that you can't see to the bottom.

For editing it is not the camera but the format you are recording ,Avi mpeg1,2,4 avchd hd dvcpro hd are all formats of video. Windows movie maker ,Premiere Elements, are basic editing programs for the pc for mac I movie or final cut pro works fine I use premiere pro just remember that less is more learn how to edit with straight cuts first do not try to impress with transitions learn your flow & pacing First. Also use the undo button for mistakes, the best way to edit is to get in front of you computer & start editing less is more on effects & tricks and slo mo ,Use good music, support your local bands & don't use music that is copyrighted or songs you hear on the radio that play alot I edit to the music cut on motion & flow . Don't try to impress with tricks use good footage and good things will happen . It's not the camera or the software it's the person behind the camera & computer I try to make it look like I never touched the footage Good footage in great video out We Are takin pre order's for Wake UP It's being pressed now Good Luck JL

"just remember that less is more learn how to edit with straight cuts first do not try to impress with transitions" That's some of the best editing advice you can possibly get right there. KISS "We Are takin pre order's for Wake UP It's being pressed now" Sick, you'll be getting my sometime this week.
