I have the cheapest model made. No built in maps. I use it to calibrate speedometer and perfect pass. Paid $100 for it a couple years back.

It is the garmin etrex base model. http://www.overtons.com/modperl/overtons/detail/pdetail2.cgi?r=detail_view&item_num=72660&fcat=2L4 H

Its been good for what I've used it for. Not much value for navigation without the maps etc. I'm sure it does a lot more than I have tried.

Check out www.gpsnow.com for good GPS pricing... or of course ebay. I've got the cheapest etrex and it very basic, but does a fine job. You can interface it back to your pc and do all sorts of stuff. The graphics are just lacking. I think the LegendC is the one I would like to have.

So can you download maps or anything for the regular eTrex? I got one recently but haven't spent much time with it yet. It seems a little tough to use since I don't have a map or anything on it. I've marked points but it isn't real easy to get back there without a map...that is if you're on a confusing body of water with many coves and such. Any help navigating would be appreciated.

Check out the garmin "gps map 76" as they have upgraded it quite a bit you should be able to get a killer deal on this one. If you ever run at night or get stuck in fog youll want those bouys showing up. Plus you can upload street maps in addition to the preloaded database of maps, very handy and well worth the extra cost.

I just bought one from West Marine for $150 it was on closeout. I have not had a chance to sit down and figure it out yet(we have not had any rainy days),lol. But for the price, I figure why not have one.

You cannot download maps to the basic eTrex. However, you can have all your maps (topo/photo/whatever) on your pc and upload/download points or tracks either way. You can link your eTrex to your laptop and plot your course in realtime on aerial photos in your boat.. if you so desired. I've done that in my truck before, just had't needed to take my laptop in the boat yet.
