Just curious to see what other states that access a property tax on your boat are charging you at. I know this might be a little more info than people want to give out, but I just got my personal property tax bill on my 05 Supra and the dam thing was $900!

WTH is that?? Are talking about when you purchased the boat? Sounds like you're saying you have a recurring tax for personal property. I hope I'm wrong!!!!!!!! That's wholly un American! I'd move before I paid tax to continue using the boat I already paid tax on!

Not sure if your being sacastic with that Jason, but yes. We can't tag the boat, so it gets taxed as personal property. Now I don't have a problem paying something( I was figuring around 300-500), but $900/year is fricken ridiculus.

^dont worry, it should go down a few dollars a year

...we pay taxes once when we buy it...thats it. Do you pay sales tax and then 900 a year.....if yes...............wow

I believe Missouri does the same.

Here in Illinois we don't have that (at least for cars and boats), but I pay about 2.2% in property taxes for the value of my house.
Old     (psudy)      Join Date: Dec 2003       09-14-2009, 9:54 AM Reply
Since it was a private out of state sale, I did get out of sales tax. If I would have purchased it from a dealer in KS, then yes I would have paid sales and property tax. I guess I figured it would be about the same as tagging a vehicle of like value. I was wrong.

Nick, Missouri does have the same thing, but the taxes are considerably less. I keep our cruiser there and only pay around $600, and it is worth considerably more(when purchased).

In WI pay sales tax when you buy a boat and first title it, then $25 for 3 years of registration.

In my area of Virginia the personal property tax rate is $3.60 per $100 of value, so if your boat is worth 75K your yearly PP tax bill is $2,700.

And people wonder why I drive and ride behind beaters. MO resident and PPT's bring on teh suck. It's crazy how oddly selective they are too. Virginia may be for lovers but it's not for owning nice things.

Jim that can't be right. Are you sure it's not $3.60 per thousand? I'm from VA and still have relatives there.

FYI, in California is a Un-secured Property Tax. $.02 not a Luxury Tax.

Sorry, not trying to piss you off Kenny..

Verified it before posted $3.60 per $100 (This is in Chesterfield County). The taxes on vehicles are not as bad (they get reduced based on age of the vehicle - boats, trailers, and campers not included). Our Real Estate taxes are .95 per $100 of assessed value - Taxes suck in VA
Old     (alans)      Join Date: Aug 2005       09-14-2009, 10:33 AM Reply
jyoung, are you sure about that. Sales tax for DGIF is 2% on the Boat and DMV is 3.5% for the trailer. Then the property tax is reoccurring at that rate annually, adjusted to the "value."

MD is 6% Sales tax, then no property tax there after.

So I guess it is just a call you have to make about how long you expect to keep your boat.

Real estate is not too bad in Chesterfield. We are at $1.20 per $100, used to be $1.43 before it dropped.

Ours is called "Unsecured Property Tax"

It might vary from county to county, but ours in Orange County Ca. is 1% of the boats current value. Been paying it every year since my first boat in 1979.

...Private aircraft is taxed the same way.

You folks in TX, TN, AZ, AK and FL plus a few more have it good in many ways - no income tax either. Maintained TN residency for 20 years while in the Army - retired last summer and immediately took it in the keister by state of VA

Utah has yearly property tax. Usually amounts to about $400-$500 per year for a late model wakeboard boat.

Property taxes are the most repressive tax ever. They tax your wealth, but not your income. If I were a politician I would eliminate it, but you would have to pay for it with sales or income tax. Once you have accumulated wealth and property, I would not have you get the shaft just to keep it.

So is there a state income tax in VA?? I'm guessing with property tax rates like that, you probably don't have state income tax?
Old     (alans)      Join Date: Aug 2005       09-14-2009, 12:51 PM Reply
Yep, income tax too.

jyoung, I am $1.20 per $100 in the good ol' City of Richmond.

What's the income tax percentage?? Here in MN its' like 10-11%, which is pretty high, but we don't have all the goofy property taxes, just on land and houses basically...

Charlie;

My VA income tax runs about 5%, with property taxes on the house, vehicles, trailer and boat. Also have sales taxes too - around 5% depending on locality

Guess so, just hate to get the yearly tax bill on Jun 1st - seems to hurt more when they take it at one time instead of a little every paycheck. Ce La Vie....

Jim,

My sister and brother in law live on Lake Chesdin. The tax rate isn't like that. If you look on the website.

http://www.chesterfield.gov/government.aspx?id=2110&terms=personal+property+ta x+rate

It shows that it is $3.60 but for 100% FMV (Fair Market Value). Not per $100. If the taxes were that high I know my sister would be having a fit.

Just paid my tax bill $542 and I have two counties sending me bills because I moved and both counties claim I owe them! This is freaking ridiculous! We need to all ban togethor rent one p.o. box in arizona and register our boats there! Of course half the lakes around here won't allow an out of state boat on them because of the zebra mussels! And yes we have to pay taxes on the boat when we buy them too! I believe luxury tax kicks in after 75k and its a higher tax bracket for the balance left over 75k, at least thats the way it was on my car.

Ours use to be value based, think like 1.5% or something like that. It was a surprise to me.

A few years ago they went with ages based. 19-23' boat is $275 each year for the first 3, then $220 for the next 3, then $175 next 3, $120 next 3....then $50 a year.

Boats over 31' are still value taxed.

Well, add VA to the list of Commie states that I can't flee to for escape from the People's Socialist Republic of New Jersey.

South Carolina has a tax when you buy the boat that maxes out at $300. We also get hit with property taxes yearly. My X1 was $600. I have not yet paid it on my X2 (due in Jan) so I would imagine that it will be $800. Income tax is %6.

Hanger Pilot, sent you an offline email; Don't think our overall tax situation here in VA is as bad as say CA; but we get hit just the same.

You guys must have to have a full time accountant to deal with all that (rap. Here we pay annual rates for the house calculated on what the govt. says you would recieve by renting your house out. Mine is about $AU 1,600 per annum on a house valued at around $AU 900,000. Income tax is on a sliding scale capped at 48%, most are in the 20-33% bracket. Any purchases incur 10% sales tax and that is it, no ongoing bills. Having said that,I reckon when it is all added up we probably all pay around the same anyway, based on the principle that govt. will screw the people just to the point of boilover with great precision.

WOW.
How freaking ridiculous. In WI we pay sales tax and reg. fee. I would rather pay a few tickets a year @ 50$ a pop then pay $600/yr to use my own property.
That's theft. F-ing douchebag politicians...

While we may pay $25 for a three year boat registration in Wisconsin we take it in other ways:
5.6% sales tax (in Milwaukee County)
Approx. 6% income tax
$1.99 per hundred annual property tax on the assessed value for your home (suburban Milwaukee county).

But, we've got one of the best public school systems in the U.S, from 4 year old kindergarten all the way through Univ. of Wisconsin, a "public ivy." Outstanding services (weekly trash pick up, snow plowing down to dry pavement after every snowfall, etc.). Plus, we've got 14,000 lakes and most of them have no crowds. (i.e. we are on a 1,200 acre lake with 6-8 other boats on a holiday weekend. You don't even see the others and you don't hear their music, either. You can't beat that.)
Old     (cla10beck)      Join Date: Dec 2007       09-16-2009, 9:59 AM Reply
I agree with Lakeski. When we talk about these taxes, we need to look at the all of the taxes being paid.

For example, here in PA, it only costs $36 to register a car, and $50 to register a boat, but the state income tax is 3.2% and our property taxes are a little high (but not nearly as high as NJ).

I am sure all your states are getting their money, it just depends on whether they are taxing people with more things (Democratic approach), or taxing everyone equally by percentage of earnings (republican approach).

We do have one crappy tax, that is the philadelphia wage tax. I don't live in the city, but work in Philadelphia so they charge a 3.5% wage tax on top of my 3.2% state income tax.
I get nothing for this money but I'm making up for all of the cheap property taxes in the city. That sucks.

SC: Sales tax is capped at $300. Personal property tax on for 2008 Supra 21V was 900 first year, 750 second and decreases according to some astronamical equation based on depreciated value to 0 at 10 years. This is true for cars and boats. Registration $30 for 3 years. Cars have an additional road use tax that was around $90 per year for my Tundra Crew Max.

BTW if you buy an outboard in SC, you pay $300 sales tax on the boat and 7% on the motor with no cap, plus all the property taxes.

I got a kick out of lakeski:

"While we may pay $25 for a three year boat registration in Wisconsin we take it in other ways:
5.6% sales tax (in Milwaukee County)"

Our sales tax in my county is 9.25% so I guess we get it everywhere!

Property tax is 1.25% so our non prop 13 house we pay taxes of almost 10,000 per year!

Wanna move to California anybody?

Not to mention we can't find gas for less then $3.10 a gallon right now!
