malibu vlx wake

what is the deal with this boat, there is a warning that says you are not supposed to put weight in the lockers. what is the point of the lockers then? haha. anyhow with the stock 1250 hard tanks how do other people like weighing down these boats. i have tried a 750 down the middle of the boat with the stock as well as the wedge in the middle 45 degrees and the wake is ok any suggestions

We put sacks in the back locker just make sure you fill the stock tanks first. Not sure why you would run the wedge at 45 degrees. we ran stock ballast plus 1500 lbs of lead. We always ran the power wedge all the way down or just one tick back up after all the way down gave us a good lip on the top.

I fill up all my ballast tanks, wedge all the way down and run two 750 fat sacs one in the seating area floor by the back cushion and one inbetween the walk through area throws a clean monster wake for us. I also have about 200lbs of crap in the side compartments in the back too!

myself and a couple others run ours with zero # over stock in the rear. my boat = stock 1250, wedge all the way down, 300 lead nose, 500 lead under the helm, 500 lead under the rear seats as far back as you can go but just forward the engine. its kickin!!!!!

im very similar to robert^^^^^ just a little extra stuffed in the nose. i used to run mine just like yours robert with just the 2 sacs in the same locations, i just changed it over to lead and pushed it a little forward.

you dont want the swim deck under water in a vlx but you want that nose dipping low when you slow down.

i run full stock ballest except i dont have the front tank. plus 450# bags in each trunk, and a 650 pound sack in the nose plus full wedge minus one click.

I went out with Bret V and Brent Starr on Brent's 08 VLX and he had the stock 1250, triangle bow sack filled to probably 500, 350 in each rear compartment and 1500-2k in lead under the seats in the cockpit. I think he also had a 350-500 lb sack in the middle of the floor. This was with no wedge. I didn't ride but the wake looked huge and solid. I know Bret liked it a lot.

The wedge at 45 degrees should put out the maximum downward thrust while moving forward. This is a serious question because I own my first Bu, but why do I keep hearing the wedge should be at 90 degrees or nothing at all for surfing?

45 degrees just screws up the wake in my experience. Seems like it is kind of like a wing with a angle of attack of 45 degrees has allot more turbulence to the airflow then straight and level. The down force is optimum at all the way down has been my understanding.

it is a bit confusing because it shows teh wake size with it all the way up. I have a new 08 vlx and have been playing with the wake we have been running 2k lbs total with the wedge all the way down to the wedge one tick from the top. With it all the way it makes the wake really steep.

The ballast tanks are not pressurized therefore the warning is placed to limit the amount of weight placed on the under floor tanks. So filling them really isn’t going to help much if at all.

Most I know have been running 750’s in the rear trunk for surfing for several years (’05-’07 model years) w/o any affects.

How do you all keep from taking on water with 1500 in the bow? I fill my front tank and have 200 in lead in the bow. That's 600 lbs. We often have two people up there as well. That makes it about 900 to 1000. Even at that amount it takes very good driving not to take on any water. Any lapse of concentration and you find yourself coming at or facing a roller and there is a couple of gallons of water in my boat. How do you guys avoid this??

Either put some more weight in the back or come off plane really slow. With the setup I mentioned above we had to slow down just right. You had to be careful of taking water over the bow and the stern. The water was glass and there was only a couple other boats out though.

that is a big vlx wake there Bryan.

Malibu wakes never seem to look very big in "from the boat" pictures, so if it looks big in the pictures, then you know that the wake is mackin!! I like it.

lol, i second that john^^^^^ whats cool is the vlx in the background belongs to a friend of ours and his wake is set up just like mine. this pic was at shift change, they were heading in we just got out, gotta punch your card at the bottom of vics, lol.

heres another shot of the port side, all the other pics were rider shots with no wake in them. ill try and get some more this week of just wake shots, got a little more weight in her this week.

how much weight and where?

the above wake was stock 4 tanks = 1250, 440 on the floor all the back against rear seat. 440 as far forward as it can go in the walkway. 100 in lead in the nose in the side cut outs in the bow. and a 100 in lead just on the floor.

the 440's have now been replaced by 500 in lead all the way back under the rear seats but forward of the motor and storage lockers, 500 in lead under the helm 200 in lead in the nose and we are going to be running the 440 back in the walkway. gonna be MACKIN!!!!!!!!

That little thing? Ha ha, I love the VLX wake, best wake I have ever hit is Jeff W's dumped 07 VLX. Heaven!

I have to agree with some of the comments above. Looking at a VLX Wake from the boat never looks big, but once you get back there it's a different story. Now I'm not sure I agree with all the weight, IMO you can only weight a boat so much.

I use all 4 stock ballast tanks-
+ 400lbs in each locker-
And a 250lb sack on the floor in the walk through-
No Wedge (When using xtra weight)-

I rarely do this but when I do it matches the Wake shown above.

We usually run the full stock +
700 in each locker and 400 in pop-bags up in the nose, as far forward as possible. No wedge, the wake is really nice and the boat handles really well.

We ride 23-25MPH at 70-85' depending on the rider and speed. I'm a 23.4 at I believe either 75 or 80, can't remember off the top of my head.

400'S in the rear. 1200 in lead in the middle and 750 up front. Plus stock 1250.

Bryan, that is probably the nicest wakesetter I think I have seen!

Agreed with more weight in the front as that looks like a very long, mellow transition. A lot of weight in the back or the wedge deployed would have made it more peaky.
