I am in Calgary.
I was checking out another site, and it seems that some Americans pay substantially less than Canucks.
I would assume that I cannot buy insurance for my boat across the border. (ie the broker for is based in Canada)
The thing that bugs me is the underwriter is a US based company

There are two main insurance providers for boats in Canada from what my agent tells me. Beacon Underwriting and Premier Marine. I also found State Farm to be competitive in the past but they required you to have your house with them as well (or thats what my agent said). The rates are based largely on value of the boat so a 96 v210 will be much less than an 06 VLX.

You would be surprised at the number of uninsured boats on the water as it is not a legal requirement to have boat insurance in Canada. I had a two-day-old bu get run right over while towing behind a houseboat once. The guy had no insurance so my company covered it and sued him.

I am currently with Beacon under a group plan through my waterski association... but I have used Premier too...

I called Dolphin in Vancouver... they have a website you can apply online.. they were another $30 cheaper than my so called group plan at Beacon...

thanks for all the info guys.
2 day old Bu getting run over - that would suck...very badly! gotta b on the twochop.

State farm requires you to have an immaculately clean record (Home and Auto). if you do then the rates are fantastic.

I tried last year thru the waterski Assoc, but after you included the assoc. fees the insurance rate was higher.

I guess 750 to 800 sounds like the going rate. I guess I was just fishing for a better deal.

My father has a 30yr old SeaRay that has never been insured... um $800 x 30yrs = 1/3 new boat

This is true. If you want cheaper insurance premiums then you can tell them how much you want to insure your boat for. example: $50,000 boat= $800/year, if you only insure it for $25,000 it should be +/-$400/year. But by doing this your maximum claim would be $25,000 if it is a complete loss.

Matt,

You should get another quote on your Ski Ray. For a boat of that age and value, $525 is steep.

I uese premier marine-I used them in Vancouer and now in Kelowna-mine has been 824 for an o2 209-X9..that is of course based on value when purchased-full replacement cost and 2 mil li,,,I would like to think it should be cheaper based on what you guys have been quoting...I have looking into other providers...issues arose such as insurance nul and void if incident happens while boat is on a trailer not attached to a vehicle...and other petty things...premier..is basically no issues...turn key...total repalcement and have been a dream to deal with...as I was making sure no issues now that I Moore my boat as opposed to trailering it...the agent was like......"the majority of the boats we insure are moored in vancouver area and avg upwards of 600K each,,,issues with a 60K ski/wb boat are non issues...." My buddy was insured through them...had is boat stolen and they cut him a chq...based on purchase value no issues...
regardless..I may have to rate shop this year!! simply based on value!

just got a quote from premier marine for my 06 x-star. 70k value for the boat, 7k trailer, 5k personal effects and 2million liability $947/yr. still seems a bit high for what i am seeing on here.
