I've been working on a gainer for a month now and sometimes it almost works. One time I over rotate the next I under rotate and sometimes I just feel like i'm off axis. Today we took a video camera along and now after seeing what I was doing I think I was doing more of a roll than gainer, only maybe half and half. It looked like I wasnt squaring up enough to the boat and was being pulled off axis but I had relaxed my cut by 1 or 2 seconds. Should I just say screw the gainer and try to pull the roll. I understand the mechanics are similar but you want to take off while still cutting out and accelerating. Any sugg's?

To learn the gainer, make an aggressive cut out, as you get close to being even with the boat, turn in and try to be travelling in a parallel path with the boat. If your cut was hard enough, you'll get just a little slack in the rope. Now it's time to dip, jump, and flip. That little bit of slack should keep line tension from pulling you off axis. As you progress, you can start throwing it with line tension, which will make it higher.
Check out www.foilfreaks.com and click on tutorials for more info on both rolls and gainers.
