You do certainly have the potential to get ticketted for riding in a non-USCG vest such as the SL Ultra, although I've worn nothing but "outlaw" vests since O'Neil invented the first one in the late 80s, and I've never gotten a ticket (knock on wood), but I know others who have. As far as the SL vest, it is comfy but kind of thin with not too much padding. But in my experience, it is pretty bomb-proof, which I like. I had one of the originals, and I gave it a beating for like 3-4 years, It definitely gave me my money's worth and then when it finally broke, I sent it back to SL and they gave me a brand new one, no questions asked. That one again lasted me several years and was still going strong when it blew off the boat last year and was lost. To me, SL really showed me something with the quality of their product and commitment to customer service. I am glad to put in a good word for them and to support their business.
