Currently I have 4 x 6.5 kicker "marine" speakers and two mako mb quart tower speakers. When turned up the kickers don't sound too clean.
Specs on the kickers:
Power range 2-65 watts
RMS Peak power handling 175 watts
Sensitivity 90 dB
Frequency response 43-20,000 Hz

I was thinking of swapping them out for some polk MMC650's.
Specs:
recommended power range: 10-80 watts RMS
peak power handling: 160 watts
frequency response: 43-25,000 Hz
sensitivity: 90 dB

Would this be a good upgrade or would I just be wasting my money? Any other recommendations?

I just put the momos in and they sound great. I'm running a kicker 850.4 to the 4 in the rear. Do you have an amp or just the head unit powering them?

Headunit powering the speakers and the tower speakers are amplified

I have the Polk MMC 650's, I might recommend the cheaper db675/650 over the MMC's. They are a bit more efficient, lighter, no outboard XO box.

Other options are Infinity Kappa's (watch wiring, 2 ohm speakers), or the good old pioneers.

And of course the WS 650's...

I'm gonna be pulling out some polk db 650's pretty soon if you want em $50 + whatever it would be for shipping. There in perfect shape used less than a year. I'm just upgrading to components. set of 4

Can do. The speakers I orderd are on there way so I should be able to get them thrown in pretty quickly.

If you are running the kickers off the head unit, power might be your weak link. No quality speakers are going to sound very good without solid power behind them.

I swapped out the stock kicker speakers out of my boat last season, switched to polk momo's and sounds way better. You can't drive the kickers with very much power, that 1/2" tweeter starts to sound nasty pretty quick. You can get the polks for less than half the price of the wetsounds.

I have the momos. I love them, great tweeters and very durable. I like the bigass crossover;) They just sound great.

Sleez, do yourself a favor and put an amp to your kicker's before you yank them out.

I'd recommend the Kicker ZX650.4 or the ZX850.4 for those speakers.

They will scream if you do that, and won't need to yank them out. If you don't like them after that, then yank them ... your gonna need the amp for the Polks as well so you will have lost nothing.

Tanner that's funny, with either one of those amps he'll blow the crap out of them. I was powering mine with a kicker 350.4 and they were screaming for mercy.

Admittedly the 850.4 Might be a little much, but the 650.4 is perfect for them. I know, b/c I've been running them off of a 650.4 with no problems for 2 years now. Those speakers call for 75 Max, and the 650.4 will give you about ~ 85W x 4 @ 4Ohms. Gives you a bit of headroom to play with.

***Correction***
I just caught that he was using the Marine speakers, and not the KS650.2's. But the specs are almost identical and therefore the 650.4 would still be a great choice.

Tanner that's wierd the specs I've seen on the 650.4 are 120 watts rms at 4 ohms, and since they are pretty underrated probably looking at closer to 150 rms at 4 ohms. You sure you use that amp, I think you're getting your specs mixed up somewhere. That's to much amp for those speakers.
Old     (tanner)      Join Date: Oct 2005       05-11-2008, 1:17 PM Reply
Your probably closer to right about the 120. Kicker doesn't post their 4 Ohm specs on these amps for some reason on their site. So I just divided the 2 Ohm spec in half.... yes I know that you don't really get double your power into 2 Ohms like many claim.

And yes... I use the ZX650.4. I have an 850.4 for the tower speakers, a 650.4 for my interior speakers, and a ZX750.1 for my sub.

Over at Tigeowners, we have one of Kicker's marine engineers, Phil.... he even said the 650.4 was a good choice for those speakers.

I personally don't think to much power is a bad thing (to a point) .... UNTIL you get stupid with the gains. I personally like keeping my gains down, and having some headroom. Even when I used to compete in SQ in IASCA, I always gave my components more power than they needed. Underpowering causes more problems than overpowering.

I have had polk momo's and loved them on my old boat. They were very loud and sounded great to me. The 6x9 and 6.5 were very durable and I got them on ebay for cheap.

I have Kicker on my new boat , cause the dealer I bought the boat from said they were real good and BLAH BLAH BLAH. Bottom line they saw $$ signs and sold me crap at high price.

I plan on buying better speaks and MOMO's are probably the ones I am going to buy. I would look at WS, but they do not have 6x9's.
