Looks like a great new body:

15 MP
6.3 fps
AF micro adjustment
Digic IV - ISO 12800

I guess they finally got tired of watching Nikon sell all of those 18-200's and came out with their own. A lot cheaper then the Nikon version though, I wonder how good the IQ will be?

Perhaps Canon was just doing extra testing so they don't have any focusing miscues this time? They still need to play catch-up with a FF D300 killer.

The Nikon D90 just went official too I think.

I was thinking about picking up a 40D in the near future but I think I'll wait now.

The AF microadjustment is worth the extra $ if nothing else. And it sounds like Nikon finally got Canon to put a decent LCD on one of their bodies! 6.3 fps is about as fast as you're gonna get for under 2K. (If that's 14 bit RAW as well, I hope Canon isn't cheating like Nikon and listing fps for jpeg only.) Digic 4 huh, first time I've seen Canon announce a new processor that wasn't in a 1 series.

I'd like to see the IQ at ISO 12800.

Rich- Has Canon ever varied their FPS based on RAW/JPEG (or grip battery, or....)? I don't think they have?

quote:

Drive System
Drive Modes
Single, High-speed continuous, Low-speed continuous, and Self-timer (10 sec. or 2 sec. delay)
Continuous Shooting Speed
High-speed: Max. 6.3 shots/sec.
Low-speed: Max. 3 shots/sec.
Maximum Burst
JPEG (Large/Fine): approx. 60 (CF)/approx. 90 (UDMA CF)
RAW: approx. 16
RAW+JPEG (Large/Fine): approx. 11
Based on Canon's testing standards with a 2GB CF card, high-speed continuous shooting, ISO 100 and Standard Picture Style
Varies depending on the subject, CF card brand, image-recording quality, ISO speed, drive mode, Picture Style, etc.

Not so far that I know of. It must be that the digic 4 chip is capable of way more throughput then digic 3. If my cam was the fastest to date 10.3 fps @ 10.1 mp (14 bit RAW) sounds like 6.3 fps with 16 mp RAW 14 bit is pretty close if not faster if you're counting total bits.

It's great, Nikon has forced Canon to start putting all their high end features on non 1 series bodies to stay competative. If this new sensor doesn't have Nikon style high ISO mush (let's face it it's not Nikon or Canon's fault, there's just too many pixels on a 12 mp + APS-C sensor to capture light efficiently, they're doing it all with software) then this could be a pretty amazing camera. they claim the sensor has some new microlens technology.

The tech has me drooling wondering how I could gather up $1500 before this hits the market...I'm also interested in the 18-200...talk about the ideal walk-around lens for us. My buddy has one on his Nikon and always laughs at me as I switch lenses in different situations, carrying a small bag would be a nice change of pace.

D'oh, I was planning on buying a 40D within the next few weeks... What are the odds that the 50D release will have an impact on the price of a new 40D? If not, I'm going to have to wait for the 50D to come out.

Canon just announced a nice rebate on the 40D / 70-300 combo. I hear the 40D will stay in the lineup for a while.

I just realized that for those of us who discuss on this Audio/Video subgroup, we should have a customized listing in our profiles for our camera setups. I'm always wondering what people are shooting with...post up your gear like they do in the photo forums.

You might want to start a new thread on that one.

Does anyone know when the rough release date is scheduled for the 50D?

B&H email stated @ October.
I'm sure you can put yourself on a waiting list with Rita or Adorama.
