So, we have tried to get him to do HS FS 360's. He does not spin FS, he will only try them BS. Says it feels more natural. So OK that's fine, but he can only do a bs 180 1 wake.
I tried to get him to TRY a HS FS3 and he acts like he's never jumped a wake! Looks a little spastic! So I had him just do a 180 and I noticed on his 180's he is not using the handle to rotate, he just opens up is body and lets go with one hand. So my question is this...do you think he has learned a 180 incorrectly by not using 2 hands and moving the handle, and now that is why he can't spin FS?
That is my theory, but I am not sure how to fix it now...

First off, who is "he"? Your son, friend...? Without seeing any video of what he actually doing on his FS spins, I'm gonna bet that he is trying to throw it too hard rather than letting the wake pop first then spin later. On his HS 1's, tell him to try 2 handed and once he pops, just move the handle from the front him to his rear him (which will become his front him after the 180). Try to take some video and post it and you will get a ton of advice after that on this message board.

Donna, sound like "he" is a snowboarder. A lot of people who learn to snowboard, before wakeboarding, find it easier to spin backside. I know when I do 180's snowboarding, I only spin backside. Anyways, this might also explain why he is throwing his front side 180's off the wake, you throw them off the kicker in snowboarding.

Tell him to wait. Get pop, then pull. If he has access to a trampoline at all, neighbors or friends house, have him tie a rope and handle to a tree and practice the technique on a trampoline. It will make a huge difference.

Good luck and keep us up-to-date.

I think your son has the same problem as I do. I can't spin FS flat very good at all but backside 180s or 3s I have no issues. I can't explain it. I can however spin off axis FS. Maybe try off axis. Get some time on a trampoline too.

just watched the vid. is that what he does everytime he tries a regular 180? He threw a switch 180 no prob, and landed it because he takes off switch, and lands regular which is more comfortable. When you throw a regular 180, you are landing switch and its not as natural feeling. He should try to ride switch for a little bit and try some switch wake to wakes. All he did wrong on that 180 was not shift his weight over the board so he landed heavy on his heels and the board slid out from under him. He should try to land over his toes and ride away from the wake. Once he has that dialed in then go for the HS 3's. He's got talent for a young kid.

thanks! He can usually land them, but I dont think he uses the handle properly. he seems to be opening up his body too much, instead of just rotating the board. I try to get him to wait to do the 180, he falls and says he cant do it. He does better when he grabs it.

Not to speak out of place here, but does 'he' really want to learn to spin fs 3's? Let him learn whatever tricks he has most fun doing and feels comfortable with IMO.

Regardless, he needs to wait until he is at the peak of his jump to start the fs rotation, and get over his toes to stick the landing while keeping the rope in and moved to his trailing (right) hip.
