so my current truck is dead, and i've got a down payment on another f150 - 5.4L, 4wd. i'm towing around a nautique super sport which you may as well call 5000lbs with gas and gear.
my question is just to do with gear ratios. this one has 3.55 and tow package. usually the tow packages are with 3.73, and i understand its a little better as you get more torque. i just want to know if i buy this truck, will towing my boat be 'not as good as it could be', or will running 3.55 gears cause a burnt out tranny sooner?
thanks for any help

Never heard of a tow package with 3.55's?
I'd pass on that one. 3.73's at least or even find one with 4.10's
If the truck is really nice , you can swap out the rear end.

3.73 gears should hardly count as "tow" IMO unless its 4.10 its not reallllllllly "tow"

Watch out for the older ones... with the triton engine, they shoot spark plugs out... I've seen it happen, first hand (99 F250 V10), it sucks and is not cheap.

truck's an '05. if i didn't have to tow a boat, 3.55 would be my choice hands down for my driving style. so again, if this thing doesn't tow as good as the 3.73 i understand completely, and i can live with that. I just can't live with the burnt out tranny.

ya man i know about the plugs. when i looked into buying a dodge ram, shooting out plugs seemed like a joy compared to the drivetrain problems they're cursed with. i also think the plug thing is a non issue after may 2003. in my opinion all these trucks are the warranty expires. keep your fingers crossed is all you can do. i also work for ford so i kinda have to buy one. even though i'm buying used it doesn't matter that much, it just looks screwed up driving into the lot in the competition's vehicle in times like these. don't even say toyota.

4:10's are totally not needed. With the 3:55's your tow capacity is gonna be 7400lbs if its s stock tow package than you should have a tranny cooler and you'll be fine.

Think of it like a stock prop on a boat, it will work, but it could be sooooo much better with the right gears!

I beleve the two diff gears come with different tire sizes so the overall ratio is the same either way. you just get a taller tire w/3.73

Btw had a 04 F 150 w/3.55 and it towed ok not great but ok
