Our local dealer has a 2008 247 rx with 200 hours and is priced pretty well. We like the layout and the boat is in great condition, the only concern is the surf wake. We test drove a 23 LSV with surf gate, and it was an awesome wake. We were told that the 247 would obviously be not as good due to the center mounted engine and no surf gate. But, how bad will it be? Is it going to be surf-able with no rope? We just started surfing but would like to get into it more so I just wanted to make sure that the wake is good enough with this boat. Also, it has the hydrallic powerwedge and a bow, center, and 2 rear ballasts. Oh, last thing, if the wake is indeed pretty poor, are there any aftermarket surf gates you can get? If not I saw a couple homemade ones which saw some good results.

I don't know why you could not add the Malibu Surf Gate to an older boat. The 247 hull has a good reputation for surfing. The difference with the RX is that you have 800# five feet further forward than in the v-drive version. It's really easy to add 800# in the rear lounge area.
I have a Sager d-drive similar to the RX layout, but smaller, and can get an excellent wake on both sides.

It is a cool boat, but if you are really using it for surfing you will be better off with a Vdrive and getting some weight in the back. That boat will also have horrible resale. So unless you are getting a really really good deal and plan on keeping it forever...

Yes you can surf it stock. No you don't need surf gate.

Okay great...one more questions. How hard is it to install tower speakers? I'm assuming you would need an amp?

Just cut that tower off, then you won't need tower speakers.

Should be pretty easy. If you have the Illusion tower there should be 4 little black plastic caps (2 on each side) on the inside of the tower about 2/3rds of the way up the tower. Pull those off and see if the speaker wire is hanging there. They should be prewired towers, but who knows what previous owners did. The other end of the wires should be balled up at the base, where the tower folds. You will need to finish running them into the cubby and hook them up to an amp. Again, this is assumptions. Not sure what previous owners may have done, but that is probably how it came factory. Many companies make direct mount speakers to the factory locations. I know Exile does and I am sure Wetsounds does as well.

IMO, that DD 247 doesn't do anything well. There are threads all the time on TMC asking about this boat and it is always because of the great price someone has found one for. There is a reason for that "great" price.

As for Surfgate, it didn't come out until 2013. You also don't need Surfgate to make a good surf wave...most of the die hards say you can still make a better wave listing vs. Surfgate.

People are saying that the RX is not going to surf well, but isn't it the same exact hull as the 247 lsv? So if I were to add a couple sacs or so in the back of the boat it should surf about the same as the 247, if not better because the engine could act almost as a center ballast? I'm a bit confused about this.

You can still make it surf well if you proportion the weight right, but the bottom line is it will have horrible resale... Nobody is looking for a 24' direct drive.

Also, I do not believe these boats have the rear storage capacity that other V-drives typically have, so you will have sacs on seats and floor to surf...

Will it surf. Yes. Can it surf good. Yes. Will you be able to use that rear lounge at all while surfing. NO

That entire rear lounge area will be covered in sacs because there is no way to hide any of them. There are no compartments to fill or anywhere to place them out of the way. No you have a 24 ft boat with the useable seating area of a 19ft closed bow ski boat. It really isn't practical. There is a reason this boat flopped an you can get a great price on it. It's because there is absolutely no demand for it.

It sucks as a ski boat because the boat is humongous and can't fit inside a course. The ski wake is also bigger than most smaller v drives. It sucks as a pure wakeboat because there is absolutely no place to store n hide sacs. This is a boat for people who entertain and are not serious about either. It makes a good lake cruiser and allows 3 different seating/lounging areas. Kids and adults so to speak can be separated. It also has tons if room. So for beginners or people who may just flop a board or ski on for kicks every now again it's perfect. Any level above that it's not worth anything. There are so many other choices and resale on this will kill you once you figure out it really is a poorly designed boat for pure Watersports use.

Luckily we are certainly not pros. We currently have an 18' i/o without a tower and a 135hp merc and use that for slalom and wakeboarding. We use our neighbors CC 2001 without any ballast for wakesurfing- just a bunch of people crammed into one side. If we are used to that, im assuming that the 247 will be MUCH better?? One of the main reasons we got it is also for cruising with appetizers, etc. so we thought this would be a good crossover between the two.

From what you just described, it should be a good boat for your needs. Def post some pics. ENJOY. It is going to make you giddy going from that 18ft I/O to this huge wakeboat.

whoops...poor wording. We did not "get" it yet, but we told him that we will as long as everything checks out (having the dealer check the boat thoroughly). We are going to drive it in a few weeks and I will make sure to take pics.

In a few weeks? Fingerlakes are gonna be ice cold soon, what is stopping you from trying to surf it this weekend. I am gonna be riding in CNY, gonna be almost 80!

Yeah this weekend is supposed to be great! Actually, I am going up to the finger lakes this weekend and also next to close up the house, etc. That is why we cannot take the 247 out for 3 weeks....the 247 is actually in Maryland and we will be in NY the next two weekends so we can't test it out yet.

So did you go look at the boat? You get it?

Everyone talked down on the direct drives, but didn't mention the good.

Planes faster and at lower speeds
Easier to maneuver
Uses Less Gas
Much easier to work on.

There are pro's and con's to everything.

Hope you enjoy the boat.

@Chip, how is a direct drive easier to maneuver? The prop and rudder is in the same configuration? Also what data are you using that shows they plane faster and at lower speeds. Some thing like a Prostar 190 planes quicker than a G23? Also why would a direct drive use less gas than a comparable vdrive boat? Again are we comparing a small DD boat to a larger heavier Vdrive and saying it gets better gas milage.

Forgot to update you guys....yes, we did end up buying it. We took it out on the water and ended up liking everything about it- and the wake is much better than we imagined.

Great color combo. Enjoy. That thing looks humongo on the water.

Thanks! And yes...it is a monster!! Now...we thought it would be fun to name it. What do you guys think of "Keuka Lakesetter"? Keuka lake is where the lakehouse is and where the boat will be kept...so that seems like a creative name for it. My mom likes it better than the other boat, "wet dreams"...haha

Most don't believe in naming wakeboard boats and I agree. I say leave it as is

I kind of agree on not naming a wakeboard boat.

One time I bought a boat out of lake of the ozarks just based on pictures. On back of the boat was name "Paranoia". I thought it struck way too close to home. I made sure they removed before it got to me.

Dont name it, its bad luck, the boat isnt long enough. I believe the cut off is 28 ft.

I personally think it looks tacky on all boats, regardless of how it is done. If you cant match the manufacturers text, style, EXACTLY it looks out of place.

I like it

I thought the cut off was 11' but I usually don't pay attention to that stuff so I'm probably wrong.
Name it if you want. It is your boat. I like that the name you picked is not the same as 621 other boats if that helps. My boat is named Red Boat. The kids named it back in 2006. We never put the name on it as it is red, so it just kind of follows that we remember the name.
