I'm kinda new to wakeboarding, just starting to consistantly jump wake to wake. well last week i done a toeside 180 off one wake as soon as i landed i went to spin back around and wiped out. i felt the worst pain in my leg i've ever felt when i looked down i seen my knee bone and knee cap were out of line so i pushed them back in. my leg swole up and hurt pretty bad for about 2 days. it started feeling better so i went back out sat. tried the same 180 again and didn't land it but insted screwed up the other knee. this didn't pop out just twisted i guess. hurts worse than the other and still hurts today.

any advice on what i'm doing to do this and how to stop it. i've seen some of the pros wearing braces are they for prevention of this or support for the already injured. please help so i won't do this again

Last weekend a buddy of mine blew out his knee riding last weekend: completely torn ACL, partially torn MCL, bone contusions and a whole bunch more medical stuff I didn't understand. He needs a few hours of surgery but said that in the interim, he's got a custom brace with metal on both sides that holds his knee in place and prevents it from twisting or moving side to side. Dr. says he'll have to wear that for all sports from now on if he wants to walk without a limp for the rest of his life. I agree with D-Money..if you dislocated the kneecap, go see an orthopedic surgeon or at least get an MRI. Sacrificing one season for a life of walking like a normal human is a small price to pay.

I did the same (completely torn ACL, partially torn MCL, bone contusions) 5 weeks ago playing indoor football. I had ACL reconstruction surgery 3 weeks ago (using the petellar tendon). I am already beginning to jog and will never have to wear a knee brace.

Craig, I suggest your buddy sees a different doctor. I researched this quite extenisvely and know that other types of procedures (hamstring, cadaver) have much longer recovery periods and result in problems down the road (which I have seen happen with other friends). I will be able to get back on the water full force 4 months after surgery.

Make sure you see a "knee" specialist (not just and orthopedic surgeon) and make sure they commonly deal with athletes.

Let me know if you have any further questions. Also, check out the article on wakeworld:

Same surgery as mine. Good luck

Allen I only got to board a couple of times last year,but enough to be hooked.Sold my ski centurion during winter and bought a newer MC put a tower and rocking system,had intentions of hitting the water not every day but as much as possible.Never really thought you could get that hurt on the water till I joined this site and read all the stories of injuires.This year was going good,able to at least jump the wake and was ready to go big,how bad can it hurt only water.Today had surgery 9 screws and 2 plates,because of a broken ankle will be out for rest of year.Will still go to the lake to pull my buddies and enjoy what I have all my life,which is being on the water.To alot of people it is about looking cool,but first of all you need to see your docter and then by some knee braces before it's to late and might not be able to ride at all.Hopefully all you other people out there will be able to find some glass and board it up!!!

I hear ya Joe C...a second opionion is always good except my buddy is the kind of guy that will want to wear a knee brace so all the chicks think he did some crazy trick and got hurt. The sympathy vote, if you will. He's pretty much a wuss anyway. }

Hey Joe C, I had the same unhappy trio injury about 8 years ago, I had the hamstring procedure and my knee has never given me a problem and I have never had to wear a brace. Good luck with your rehab. Where did you play indoor at, I played with the Omaha Beef last season. Well, I didn't play much but I was on the squad, you don't come across too many guys that have played indoor.

I have been playing in Canton, MI. More of a recreational league ... I thought it was be a little safer than playing on a semi-pro outdoor leagure around here. I guess I was wrong. Thanks for the support ... now I'm just waiting for the snow!

wear braces. i havent had any injuries, but i wear braces and i feel a lot safer with braces on. you dont need real crazy braces that look like they were from "back to the future" or "terminator"...... but as long as they have metal joints on each side of your knee cap, they will stop you from dislocating your knees. i use nevin braces. go here and look at the "sport brace" below.... http://www.nevinsports.com/med.html
