What is it like down there? I am thinking about taking my wife and kids down there next weekend (Labor Day) to ride and check it out. Any tips or local info would be great!

Can you ride everywhere? Are there and little coves I should look for?

Well it has been about 30 years, give or take for me but my family was involved in the MBB&SC when I was a kid. The one thing I remember was it always seemed choppy or even downright rough. We never skied weekdays though. Perhaps that makes a difference. I remember camping the club parking lot and hitting the water at or near dawn. Still rough. Skiing with the club did not afford the option of looking around for better conditions plus I was just a little kid.

I would move back to SD for the food and surf alone if I could figure out a way to make a living there.

I worked down in Mission by for a couple of summers you might be able to ride really early in the morning 6-8 but after that it gets pretty crazy down there. I would not recomend going down to mission bay if you want to wakeboard at all during the day its just to rough. You have to drive in a counter clockwise circle so that pretty much makes it impossible to run a good line. if your looking to ride in mission bay wait a couple of weeks it calms down after labor day.

Tommy,

On Labor Day weekend, Mission Bay will be insane, not to mention dangerous. If you're into decent riding, I'd recommend 6AM dawn patrol because after about 10:00 it will be packed with jetski's and people who don't know how to drive boats. My kids are 15 & 17 and I wouldn't pull them behind my boat on Mission Bay on a summer holiday weekend.

A better option would be Carlsbad Lagoon but I'm hot sure if you can launch your own boat there. You can rent pulls though. http://www.carlsbadlagoon.com/

Or third, try El Capitan reservoir about 25 minutes east of Mission Bay in Lakeside. It hasn't been very crowded lately although it will be blown out after 10:30 or so. If you're just out for a day on the water, this will be a much safer option than Mission Bay. http://www.sandiego.gov/water/recreation/elcap.shtml

Lastly, if it has to be saltwater, San Diego Bay would be better (less crowded than Mission Bay). Launch for free at Shelter Island Boat Ramp in Pt. Loma, http://www.sdboating.com/ramps.htm, then travel south past Coronado and Downtown to near the Silver Strand & Glorietta Bay.

Good luck.
