X-2: MCX vs. RTP

A friend of mine is considering purchase of an X-2 (new style) and is looking at a couple. He hasn't owned a wakeboard boat before so most of this is new to him. What are people's thoughts on MCX vs. RTP? I have an 05 X-2 (old style) with MCX but have never driven an RTP so can't give him first hand advice. Does the RTP have enough oomph to get a fully loaded X-2 out of the hole and easily onto plane? How much is resale affected by having an RTP instead of MCX? Any thoughts are appreciated.

nope with stock prop, yep with upgraded prop.

what matt said...although the MCX is a great engine, but if you're trying to save a couple grand, the RTP should definitely be enough...i had the same question awhile back and there is a few guys on here that have the RTP in thier X-2...from what they said it does a great job..but even better with the prop upgrade..i know the RTP is at 310hp, and the MCX is 350, so its not a HUGE jump as far as power..

My 06 X2 had an RTP and my 07 X2 has a MCX. If you were to drive each boat and not know which was which, there is no way you could tell a difference. Your still talking about 310hp in only a 20' boat. When I was at Cypress Gardens in the late 80's we pulled 14-15 people up at a time all day long with a carb. 245-275hp no problem.
The MCX does look a hell of a lot better though. If your into that.

back to the 310 though. if i had my x-1 loaded, it wouldn't hardly plane with that engine. MC told me to reprop to get on plane quicker.

The engines are the same from what I understand except for the intake. That is the only difference. If you look at the numbers the bore and stroke are the same so the torque will be the same between the 2 engines. Thus the same block in both. I just ordered an 08 and didn't get the MCX because it seemed to me that the only difference should be on the top end and not worth the extra $. Hope that I didn't make a mistake for some reason I am over looking?
This was also the opnion of the dealer as well which is a bit reasuring that they would recommend this as well.

I have the RTP and I also compared numbers and found it the same. Test drove both and found no difference. The dealer confirmed this. However I surf a lot and wish I had the MCX since it has the CAT system so cleaner exhaust so I don't have to smell it as much.

WATERFREAK...check this site out...it's called FAE or FRESH AIR EXHAUST, it's a do it your-self exhaust system built for surfing, by surfers...we installed it on our 05 x-2 and it's done nothing but good things, this would help out a TON with that problem...

Anyone ever tow a slalom skier behind your X2. I'm looking at buying one but I love sking. MC says the wake will lay down at slalom speeds 34 mph +. I have skied behind a friends X1,but it was not as good as a buddies Malibu VLX. Anyone have any advice. Thanks

JP, not as good as the X1? What year VLX? I find that hard to believe. The current VLX is a lot bigger, heavier and larger/wider bump than the X1....

I ski behind mine all the time and yes the wake lays down after 34 mph. It is even better if you get the wakeplate installed.

Bryan, he has an 04 Wakesetter VLX. It suprised me also. Water Freak I ski 34 mph at 22' off, do you know how good or bad the prop wash is. I tried to demo one 2 weeks ago but after we got the boat in the water and went to find good water the sales person hit the prop on a rock. So needless to say I did not get to ski.

JP, if you're talking new X2, get and demo one with the wakeplate. Did Pat take you out? Water on the Willy is pretty low, so I'm not surprised you guys hit a rock. I have an 05 X-2 and ski at 22' off 32-34MPH. Small bump.....

That year VLX should have a good ski wake!!

Bryan, Kelli took us out. I was just getting ready to tell her she was on the wrong side of the red bouy and then we hit. I was looking at an 07' but it did not have the wakeplate. Will the wakeplate change the wake for wakeboarding. Also I believe it is not ajustable like the taps plate that Tige' uses.

JP, the wakeplate is adjustable. It has a little lever near the steering wheel where you can move it up and down. Wakeplate might change the shape of the wake a little for boarding, but it does for sure flatten the wake for skiing.

They can add a wakeplate for cheap....

The X-2 works well for skiing. I was within 2 buoys of my PB (PB behind a 197). 22 off a bit rough, it gets really good above 30 mph and shorter than 22 off. Below 30 mph, the wake is a challenge for the beginning skier - it becomes wakeboard wake at slower speeds. It also tracks fairly well through the course. I wouldn't have passed the end of course video for an R tournament, but the skier could not tell the difference.

^^^ what he said. Also with a wakeplate the wake gets even better and would highly recommend it for skiing. It lowers the nose down and flattens the wake.
