Water in the oil pan??

I recently replaced my impeller and hooked up the water lines backwards, so my boat overheated while running at about 30mph. I switched them back and the boat wouldnt turn over. So I pulled the boat and took it to the shop. The guy called and said the oil level was about 3 quarts too high, so they drained the oil and had about 3 quarts of water in the oil pan. He didn't really know how it got there. His though was that water got in the intake, but I don't see how that would have happened. Everything is fine with the boat now. He replaced the spark plugs, oil and filter and it runs fine now.

Has this happened to anyone else? Does anyone know how the water got in there?

Potentially the heat caused the engine to suck water through the exhaust, I've seen 2 late model boats do this. They both broke the starter when trying to start. Had to remove spark plugs and get the water out of the cylinders to restart. This is sometimes called hydrolock. Water enters the engine through the exhaust.

Hey Erik, I don't know the answer to your question, but I wanted to let you know that I did the same thing last week after I installed a new water pump. Luckily my friend was watching the fake a lake at the intake and noticed the boat wasn't sucking water so I discovered my mistake before the engine overheated. I hope everything works out.

water in the exhaust doesn't = water in the oil pan, it still has to get by the rings. overheating is your clue, it can cause loss of head gasket integrity and create a situation where oil and water passages are no longer sealed from each other.
