I have a ski nautique 2001 and I am putting a system in that is going to be 1900 rms watts. I am going to keep the system totally independent from my starting battery so I am going to make a battery bank that is intended to only run my system. My question is how many batteries and what type should I go with to get a full day at the lake (about 7 hours). Should I go with 6 volt golf cart batteries or stick with 12 volt batteries, what kind, and how many of each. I will charge the batteries every night when I get back from the lake.

lol just responded to your w7 thread.

batteries are an ongoing debate here on ww, Basically take your max amperage from the amp and divide that into to total potential ah of choice depending on battery ,thus telling you how many hrs you will receive. nothing is in stone until the system is hooked up and you can obtain a sure value taking into consideration the efficiency of system demands

As far as batteries ,there is always an opportunity cost with every battery out there, very difficult to get best of all worlds

12 vs 6 volt:
6 volts have a higher life span(not run time! ahs are ahs) but rather yrs before fatigue sets in due to the typically larger lead plates.
however these batteries are slower in delivering the power in comparison to a typical 12 volt, and the 12 volts will not age as well.

The charger that you choose to afford is what will be the ultimate factor in determining the longevity of any style battery chosen.

The potential to screw up batteries at this stage is high. personally I am not a fan to gel batteries and such ,as they require some type of thought ,being float charge in the winter or rate of charge between days of use,or just the plain old expense of them.
They all perform very well ,but are subject to things going wrong much easier than lead-acid.Coming from a shop-owners standpoint ,I need my work to handle the abuse that any client may impose . my job is to keep the stereo playing the longest, cleanest, and without failure.

Hey Brandon,

I am running a similar set up 1989 SN2001 with

-4 Pro 80s w/ SYN2
-kicker compvx w/750.1 kicker amp,

so around 1500W rms since I havent amped the inboat speakers yet..

Did you upgrade your alternator? and to what size and from where if you did?

I would think about your alternator before adding all of the batteries. That is after all where all the power comes from to drive those batteries.

The Alternator is not responsible for the longevity of play time. The cost associated with gaining high enough amperage to suffice larger systems in a spark arrest package is quite high in compared to other methods.
